What causes small holes in flower leaves?

I have geraniums and dahlias in containers. I sprayed them with an all-purpose insecticide when I planted them about 2 weeks ago, in particular to protect the geraniums from aphids and those worm things.

Now I'm seeing small holes especially in the leaves of the dahlias, but also starting a bit in the geraniums. Any info on what this is? Thanks.

A neighbor across the street says the small birds are pecking holes in the stuff in his garden.

Any of the above... I'd have to see the holes to make an informed guess... :)

Those buggers just fly in, chop holes in the leaves, then fly off...

7. They're hole larvae. Mom & Pop terrestrial holes leave them there to

mature, in the hope that one day they'll grow up to be koi ponds.

Sorry, no idea. Me, I want to know what those tree cocoons are... where there are big spider-webby looking things on the ends of limbs. Is something decomposing leaves to heat their eggs and provide their critters food or something???

9. If I saw those in Seattle, I'd say they're caterpillar tents.

16. Those look like gypsy moth tents or as they say in Iowa:

bag worms.

They are pretty bad actually but I don't recommend pesticide. Cut the limbs off and BURN THEM ALIVE. Sorry I'm usually more peaceful but they can do real damage to a tree and gypsy moths are currently a plague.
