Worst parent permission slip ever
I just found this note I wrote while cleaning out my old computer files this evening. Two years ago my daughter, then 14 years old, decided she didn't want to say the pledge of allegiance in school any more. Texas children do pledges to both the American flag and the Texas flag. Her refusal to pledge seems to have pissed off her teacher, who sent my kid to the assistant principal for her obstinance. (Caveat: the school was overreacting, obviously, but the little Buckette at the time was going thru a very obstinate phase) and no doubt was enjoying stickin' it to the system and being oppressed for her beliefs--like any normal adolescent should.

So the AP told my girl she could only get out of saying the pledge to Ol' Glory if she brought a note from home allowing her to abstain from the ritual. I found the whole thing pretty ludicrous, which prompted my, well, less than tactful permission slip that next day (names changed to protect the guilty):

October 15, 2004

Dear Ms. M____,

For some stupid reason, Buckette has decided that she loves terrorists more than her country, which has been selected anointed by God to carry His mission to the savages of the Third World through the holy Gifts of Napalm and Coca-Cola®. Please forgive her as she is not actually my child but the spawn of Satan and Cher.

Until such a time as Buckette formally renounces her evil, spotted owl-hugging, ozone-coddling, ne'er-do-well liberal ways and embraces the word of God and his messenger on earth, George W. Bush, please allow her to abstain from slaying saying the pledge of allegiance to the American flag. She will, of course, still be required to say the pledge to the Texas flag.

Sincerely,

Bucky Rea

I heard no more on the matter, so I assume that my well reasoned response did the trick.

8. I wonder if they got the sarcasm or not.
If the teacher and vice-principal are of the type to think that way, they might have thought that you were serious. That though makes me laugh :).

Can you imagine they're eyes coming out of their heads when reading that.

11. Brilliant! If only you could have worked the first commandment into it..
But that is pure joy! There are times I want to be a parent, and the only reason being so so that I could be a thorn in the side of the school system, constantly haranguing the assholes in the administration.

Why did you still require her to say the pledge to the Texas flag?

15. I'd have preferred to work the 1st Amendment into it, but then again...
...that's a little self defeating to my point (or maybe to theirs)

And what are you suggesting... NOT pledging allegiance to the Lone Star State? Are you mad?

14. That is freaking EXCELLENT
I envy you! I have been waiting my squids' whole public school careers to have a fight but they are such little conformists - I embarrass them and while they report the RW bullshit that happens they will not allow me to raise any hell.

But I'm certain a parent can't push a kid into rebelling their way. They'll always need to find a way to do it that annoys you. Kids.

I bet the term "ozone-coddling" must've brightened up the teachers' lounge that day.
