Post your artwork
I started the thread so I could post a scan of a painting I sold last night. It's 4" x 5" in real life. The scan comes off a bit sparkly, so I'll have to get a quality shot of the painting before it goes away. I sold it to someone who wanted to give it as a birthday gift later this month, but who agreed to hold off on delivery until December so I could hang the little bastard in a show that's coming in November.

I found the sparkplug on the street when I opened the door of my car while on my way to a painting session. I put the plug on a thin piece of mylar so I could get some skewed reflection.

I'll miss the painting, but it will go to a good home.

And what was my trepidation about with posting in DU after a month & a half? I'm glad to see you.

This is really a gorgeous night. The moon is full. I told bridgit in a PM to go look at it, but to disregard the mildly horrified expression of the "Man on the Moon"; it's only disapproval. :loveya: :hi:

your drugs are going to work really, really well tonight. Thanks for thinking I'm funny, but have you really LOOKED (not close up, I suppose) at the moon's expression? The eyes are widened in sickened disbelief, the nose is pointed elsewhere, and the mouth is open in fury and disgust at whatever it's regarding!

We'd all better behave ourselves, huh? :toast: :bounce: :loveya: *LOL*

62. Um, that first one was borne of being in court.
(Thanks for the compliment, by the way!!!) I'd tried to save a kitten and wound up cited with "destruction of real property". I'd never been in trouble before and had smashed a pane of glass trying to rescue a helpless kitten who turned out to be okay. I was drawing a postcard to my best friend that said "Welcome to Hell. Wish you were here" as I waited on a bench.

My father whispered, "Try to look serious, ok?"
I answered back, "OK. Hey, guess what? I'd rather be in Paris".

He laughed so loudly it interrupted the proceedings of a juvenile thief and armed robber. The judge glared at us.

Things are really good here now, my dear. You look marvelous, too. :loveya: :D

the hospital!

Think of it: I'd teach you how to really appreciate hospital food. We could write columns together! All the other inmates would look to us as role models. We could be like Twelve Monkeys, only stricter adherence to the news. I saw it in the movies; you CAN take over the world in a straightjacket.

Yes, I've been painting professionaly (though not as my main source of income) for a number of years.

THe top one, the one that you like, is one of my most favorite paintings I've ever done. I've not sold it, and I'm not sure if I want to sell that one... on the one hand, it's something that's so wonderful (to me, anyway) that I should let it go and bring joy to someone else; but on the other hand, it's one of those really important ones to me, so I want to hold on to it...

Ah, the life of the artist. :7

And thanks again for your compliment.

Extremely dark & strong & sensual. It's watercolor, right?

I also like people's sketchbooks too; the notes they've written and their so-called "messups" later copied & polished. But then, you know I'm also nosy. :P

117. That SUCKS. I sometimes fear that my favorite art tools may
go into extinction, to be replaced by something not nearly as good. I tend to stock up on my favorites when I have extra money. You can see the grain in your paper clearly. Did it absorb watercolor quickly? I use Strathmore cold press 140 lb paper, 6 sizes of Micron permanent black ink, no. 2 pencil and Prang professional watercolors (cheap but GOOD!!)

One of the techniques I use a lot now, I learned purely by accident! I was using a gel pen to draw before adding watercolor, and it bled just a tiny bit into the color itself. I found after some practice I could control it and turn it into believable shadows.

One other thing is I like to use cardstock as my paper when doing black and white pics. I have a Food Folio designed for submission to restaurant menus and cookbook publishers. Cardstock has SUCH a fine grain that you can add a LOT of detail and make cross-hatching and pointillism shading stand out more!

DAMN, I could go on all day!

119. A photo process I used to love was outlawed
because the chemistry was found to be too toxic to dispose of safely even when highly diluted. Moot point now that I shoot everything digitally, though.

Yeah, the Basingwerk took watercolor like a champ, was brilliant with pencil, sumi ink, even lithography, stone or plate. I just don't get why they stopped making it.

I'll look out for that Strathmore. Just finding that cache of ancient sketchbooks made me pine a bit for the days when I could still draw with any confidence, before I went into photography and graphic design and let all my other skills go to seed.

That's an awesome image. You didn't mention (in our brief conversations here in NY) that ou were an artist.

That level of detail and realism takes a hell of a lot of work and talent.

Vancouver Morning

---- for Sandra

I'm drunk with sunshine today.
It's one of those perfect days
in Vancouver - nothing can go wrong.
The birds are on the wire
outside my apartment window
singing to only me. My pillow
has cradled my head all night
like a gentle lover and has
whispered softly to me in my
dreams, the ones before and
after the dreams I have of you,
that tonight will be restful
and the day will be bright
and incandescent and the sun
will smile upon me and hold
me in its luminous arms as I walk
in the park. You should be here
with me, sharing in the solar hug
and holding my hand as we walk
to the beach and watch the soaring
seagulls sing their hungry tunes
and dive down onto the soft sand
like arrows shot from the clouds
feeding, feeding until they are
satisfied, like spent lovers
on a bright Sunday morning.

97. Not locally
My gravers I got from EC Lyons; the wood I get from woodblocks.net; the paper I get from Stephen Kinsella; the printing I do at the SF Center for the Book. A good general supply website can be found at http://www.woodengravers.net/supplies_link_page.htm

If you want to get stared on some kind of block printing sooner, Pearl on Market has a good selection of lino blocks and tools and papers. Also, check the artist section of craigslist; I often see folks advertising printing studio time and classes there.

Glad to know you like my work! I'm working up to a subscription service staring this winter and can use all the encouragement I can get :-)

I had some clients that treated me pretty crappy. I left one design consultation so pissed off that when I got back to my shop I called her back and told her I wouldn't work with her and hung up. I looked up computer training schools and enrolled the next day. I humped wood for 15 years and had not a dime of savings.

124. Thanks, idgiehkt!
I love being an Interior Designer :)

This was a fun room to do because the teen loves the green and pink. Accent colors were purple and amber.

It is a tiny room (9'x10'), and since the teen had ruined the bi-fold doors to her closet, I replaced it with sheers and ribbons. The ribbons made for an easy tie-back. Also organized the closet with clear storage boxes. The furniture had been her grandmother's, but the teen had written in marker and make-up all over the pieces. So, I just sanded, used KILZ, white paint on that, and accented the drawers with color.

133. it's strange because
back in the mid-eighties when I was in high school pink and that shade of green were so popular...but you don't see it much any more. I mean everyone had chinos that shade and wore pink button down shirts and had those handbags with the wooden handle that you could change the handbag cover on and it would be pink with green piping and green turtles on it or something. I love the dresser, I've had one before that was white that I couldn't figure out what to do with, I wish I had seen these pics then because I've never thought of just painting the drawer tops.
