Anybody have opthalmic migraines?
I'm having a full blown one right now.
The headache is VERY slight, but I've got the peripheral flashers so bad it's hard to see the monitor.
Damn.

1. I have had a few
Blurriness spirals out from the center of my left eye's vision. Luckily, I never have any pain. Go have a little lie down and relax!

3. This is both eyes.
Which I'm told is "good".
Means it's vascular and not optical.

Decreasing and almost gone now.
They usually last 15 or 20 minutes.
I can go months without one and then get 1 or 2 a week.

I think it may be (partially?) weather (pressure) related.
Today we had some heavy-duty thunderstorms with a BIG low pressure in the gulf.
Weather pressure changes seem to play a part.

5. "Opthalmic" is different from regular migraine.
See above.

20. That is the same kind I get... above the left eye.
Thank God for Imitrex. I don't get nauseated anymore, and it usually gets rid of the headache within an hour.

22. I don't get the visual aura, but
have suffered with migraines my entire adult life. Before Imitrex, they were really debilitating.
Since Imitrex came out (1994, I think) I can go to work and get on with my day, even if there is a little dull ache. I tried Relpax too... it seems a little stronger. Made my ears ring.

I would get them so bad, my teeth would hurt. I still get the light and noise sensitivity, though.
And I yawn a lot when I have a migraine coming on or going away.

4. Imitrex. That's what I take as soon as I start seeing things
but usually I wake up with a full blown migraine. Maybe 1 in every 10 migraines start during the day and I know it's coming :-(.

Imitrex saved my life. I do the injections.

6. I used to get them in High School
But I haven't had one for many years.

I remember they used to be like my vision became REALLY pixelated and blurry. At one point in HS, I had to leave school because I couldn't see my papers or the chalkboard all that well.

8. I get ophthalmic migraines on occasion...
sometimes followed by a headache and sometimes not. I don't get flashes. Instead, I get a kaleidoscope effect in the central part of my vision and then it radiates out to the periphery. For some odd reason they call the visual auras "classic migraines". Most people think that means the headache type.

I'm glad yours is now gone.

9. Thankfully, no. My migrains make me sensitive to light
but I don't get auras or flashes.

Don't talk about this too loudly. If you give my headackes any new ideas I'll never survive.

10. I used to get migraines in the area of my right temple.
I would go blind in my right eye for the duration of the headache, which was pretty freaky, on top of the horrendous pain. Haven't had one in years, thank goodness.

11. I get them but not very frequently, thankfully
Get a gradually intensifing peripheral zig-zag lightning bolt, first one was very alarming. I usually have to get someplace dark and quiet.

12. I get them on occasion
Very strange and disorienting. I usually get full-blown headache migraines but on occasion, it's the purely opthalmic type. Like you, they seem to be triggered by the weather and they usually last anywhere from 10 minutes to a half hour.

My first migraine ever was one - I was alone at home with small kids and it frightened me badly. I couldn't see the phone to dial so I called my sister because I knew her number. She called my doc who called me and explained what it must be. I thought I was having a stroke.

You have my empathy. They are really wierd.

15. Not frequently, no...my migraines are more the 'pain and puke' variety.
Hubby had to haul me in to Urgent Care last Sunday; was out of Imitrex and in so much pain I could neither function nor sleep...

Nasty. Just fucking nasty. I hate migraines, and I get anywhere from one to a dozen a month.

I really hope you feel better soon!

25. Isn't it annoying how they dispense Imitrex?
Only 9 pills to a package... I can go through that in no time. And for anyone without insurance, they are extremely expensive! They should be more readily available.

28. Oh no shit!! I had to get some once when I did not have insurance, and
could only afford three, ferpetessake...
Doc gave me two samples of 100 mg. and renewed my scrip for 50 mg., and I took one of the 100s before I left the clinic and puked it up two blocks later...*lol* I wasn't laughing about it THEN, but at least it was one of the freebies that came up!
My insurance will only let them give me a dozen at a time, and as you say, I could go through that in a week, easily, if I am having a bad spell of them...really sucks.
The folks I feel REALLY bad for are the ones for whom only heavy-duty painkillers work; they have a hard time, I hear, getting the meds they need.
They don't work for me AT ALL. I had some leftover Vicodin from a bad tooth, and took some of those once when I was out of Imitrex; what a waste!! Didn't put a dent in it...

Started getting them when I was 12, in 1968.

I rarely get them anymore since I started taking a beta blocker.

I get lots of spinny, swirly fireworks-looking things in the center of my vision, or else a cloverleaf sort of pattern that blinks and moves.

19. My first one was after having lunch at a Korean restaurant
Walking down State Street and could hardly see to walk. I spent the next 5 years trying to figure out what ingredient in Korean food gave me the reaction before I figured out it was a migraine (talked with Dr.). Just have to lie down when it happens- and it really wipes me out for the rest of the day. Very infrequent for me.

24. Do you get the "migraine mood" that comes with them too?
Right before it's going to hit, I become overwhelmingly morose and pessimistic. After it runs its course, my mood becomes noticeably brighter.

26. Yes, I used to experience a big one about once a month
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 10:24 PM by BrotherBuzz
Huge lightning bolt that would sort of orbit slowly around my field of vision before it would recede. Generally, they lasted about two or three hours. But for the last few months I've been getting two or three small ones a day. They are not as severe and debilitating as the big ones, but a nuisance nevertheless. The small ones last about ten minutes. Interesting, now that I think about it, I haven't had a big one since the small ones arrived.

But I have a good friend who gets them. She has found some decent support groups on line, and even some artwork based on the visual experiences.

31. Do they look like this?

And, is opthalmic migraine the same as classical with aura? If so, yeah, i get 'em.

Here's something else to be aware of:

http://www.neurocast.com/site/content/sessions_12_2003.asp

Migraine with aura is a common condition that frequently co-occurs with a small vessel disease called cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL). Due to the high prevalence of migraine, CADASIL is often overlooked as a potential cause and may therefore not be diagnosed until the first stroke, a symptom more commonly associated with CADASIL.1 As the disease becomes better understood, migraine with aura is proving to be a common early manifestation of disease in CADASIL patients.1,2,3 Thorough evaluation of patients experiencing migraine with aura, including family history of headache, atypical prolonged aura or MRI white matter abnormalities may indicate when it is necessary to consider CADASIL.
