How does my dog know when I'm dressed?
In clothes, that is. It'd be pretty obvious otherwise I'd imagine.

But every morning, and at different times and no matter where in the house he is, when I put clothes on instead of jammies he runs to the front door. I know he's gay and all but I really don't think he's developed *that* much fashion sense.

1. That doesn't surprise me
Unless your dog is a thick as matcom's is reputed to be, I don't find it surprising at all he can tell the difference between pyjamas and day clothes.

Your dog is gay?

2. He's an unwilling bottom
Not unwilling exactly, more...resigned. Everywhere he goes boy dogs get their hump on. It's very upsetting.

:D

14. That doesn't mean he's gay
Dogs frequently mount each other as part of socialization. (It's like they are all living in the 1970s).

As for the clothes thing, he is sensing the energy you project or possibly some other clue like the jingle of your keys going into your pocket, would be my guess.

3. Not just because he's gay, but because of his eye level:
He knows the difference between slippers and shoes.

4. I only wear shoes if I'm going somewhere or there's snow in the yard.
Our dogs always "knew" when it was time to go outside, even with my usual lack of shoes.

5. Gomez doesn't go out at a particular time.
More like when a) he makes it obvious that he's about to piss himself; or b) when we're tired and ready for bed, and don't want to wake up to a "present" in the living room.

I think he just likes dolo's shoes. ;)

8. We had to be careful with what we said around our German Shepherd.
She knew every word that could possibly refer to going "out" and how to spell it. Major pain in the ass.

when we spell O-U-T lately...I'm sure he's "getting it". :eyes:

10. I guess that makes sense
As much as I love my doggie with all my heart I don't often think of him as being that smart. :D

11. Good question
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 03:53 PM by MountainLaurel
My parents' former dog knew the difference between work clothes and weekend clothes. If Mom was in her jeans, Dexter would jump on her and try to sneak out the gate so that he could go with her. If she was in dress clothes, he'd sit quietly on the porch.

:scared:

If only I could get mine to figure that out: Muddy paw prints on white slacks do not a happy mama make.

16. Weird, innit?
Today I went upstairs, went into the bathroom, came out and went into my room to get dressed, went back into the bathroom and when I came out he was at the door.

I also will never understand the whole sniffing/peeing ritual. What exactly is it they're looking for that makes *THIS SPOT RIGHT HERE!!!!!* the absolute spot they MUST pee today? As opposed to the 4,000 others they checked out prior to finding it? :D

17. I think that dogs have a very high level of ESP.
They sense things that humans don't. My dogs know that when I leave in the mornings for work that they cannot go with me. But on weekends, I am certain that they can read my mind. All I have to do is think about getting dressed to go shopping, and then they follow me all over the house to make sure that they will be getting to go for a ride. And once I put shoes on, they are waiting at the front door. Don't underestimate the canine mind.

18. Try leaving the house naked some time. See how the dog reacts.
That way you'll know for sure he understands the concept of clothes.

20. My Shih Tsu gets excited the minute I put shoes on....
and knows what it means to pick up a purse or keys.
She knows when my feet hurt and licks them like crazy.
When I got home tonight, putting things away and talking
to her in passing just mentioning a "treat" - she zoomed
into the kitchen and assumed the "alert and ready for a
treat" position. An amazing little furry friend.

:hi:

how does anyone know it's your jammies from your regular clothes? i should think it would be obvious, even to a dog?

23. Considering that dogs are better at reading human facial expressions
and body expressions than many humans, it should not be suprising that they can tell the difference between certain clothes.
