Poll question: How old are you?
In following the many and varied discussions on DU over the years, and the even more interesting replies, I am made to wonder about people's ages. Not in any way that disparages one age group or another, but rather that there might be some inherent slant or bias that results from the sum of one's life experiences.

Just by way of example, I tend to judge *this* war through a filter wrought of having lived through Viet Nam, including a stint in the Navy. I tend to judge politics through the filter of having lived through the era of the raucous 60s and 70s.

Were I not to have that as part of who I am, while my conclusions about politics may well be exactly the same, my thought processes - and specific hot buttons - may well be different.

So, with that long preamble, how old are you?

have vinyl record albums that are over 40, and grandma's Electrolux vacuum cleaner that is from the 1950s- it still works! And for real "ancient", the grandparent's collection of 78RPM singles- top hits of the 1940s (ok, you young'uns, go look that up!).

5. Over 50 (54) and having lost friends to Nam (physically, and
emotionally), having watched the first draft lottery on TV and a good friend's birthday was pulled first, not having the right to vote until I was 19, having marched in many anti-war demonstrations, watched my own father (a WWII vet) progress from supporting the Viet Nam war to opposing the war......I also view this war and administration through a filter. It's a little hazy these days, but a filter nonetheless.

6. I'm 47
And I tend to agree with your premise that we have our opinions shaped by our views and experiences of the past. While I was a little yoo young to really have lived through the 60's, I personally am rooted in the 70's and came of age during the Carter and Reagan/Bush administration.

21. Your post brought to mind one of my all time favorites
The Byrds sang it. Bob Dylan wrote it.

"My Back Pages"

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Throwin' high and mighty traps
Countless fire and flaming road
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate," I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic flanks of musketeers
Foundation deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now

My guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

30. Well of course its unscientific
And of course it is self-selecting

And of course it may attract one age group more than another

But even accounting for such biases, it is still useful in a general sense.

You should stand up and take a great big bow. Good for you for being aware and involved.

Are your parents also politically aware? I ask this to find out if you came to this awareness yourself or if it might be your parents' influence.

Either way, welcome to DU! We're glad to have you, I'm sure.

50. I couldn't decide which one to check
Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 04:58 PM by hyphenate
because I just turned 50 this year. I went with the 50+ one, but I think that I'm still too close to the 40+ cat to really feel like I'm in my 50s.

I'm at an awkward age--coming to my prepubescent years in the 60s and having it surround me everywhere, but the link between the 60s and 70s the main influence. Teenybopper enjoying The Monkees and David Cassidy, too young by about 5 years to really appreciate the Beatles when they were around, but falling madly in love with John Denver and his causes and music. I would say that I came of age when environmentalism and New Age thoughts began to solidify and so they are causes dear to my heart, including the entire ERA movement, and never wanting to be part of the conservative "family" image. I wanted always to put MY life before a family, and satisfy MY career and life wishes before I would ever take on a marriage and kids. Perhaps a little selfish, but now I look back and see so many of my peers divorced or separated and left with nothing of themselves, and I think in many ways, I made the right decision--at least for myself.

I don't think the first ten years of a person's life shape them as much intellectually, and having an event happen in your life at that age doesn't really count for much, because you aren't "aware" of the significance of it. It's not that you couldn't, it's mostly a matter of not having any adult give you the information you need to process the events. It's different now, though, and it's one of the things we can be glad we have the internet for--even younger people can figure out things if they have the ability to access the knowledge and facts.
