Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 10:13 AM by auntAgonist
A worker using gloves to handle day old male panda twin cubs at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan province, Monday, Aug. 7, 2006. A 7-year old panda 'Qi Yuan' gave birth to the panda twins on Sunday evening. Weighing 169 grams and 119 grams, the pair were the first panda twins to be born in the world this year.

1. Wow
I would have thought panda babies would be bigger and more developed. They look more like marsupial neonates.

4. roughly the size of a stick of butter
hence the nickname 'butterstick' for Tai Shan at the National Zoo.

it takes a couple of months before they can leave their mother's side for any reason. and one of them will likely be dead by then, the infant mortality is intense.

7. not sad, just crappy evolutionary advantage
such is the way of the world, when you evolve to only eat one thing, that doesn't have the best, nutritional value, these things happen.

9. I've heard they only raise one baby, and the way some zoos
deal with the have two/raise one thing is to keep sneaking the babies in and out of her quarters all day long. I watched a special on it, it's really cute the way they do it.

It took them a long time to figure out this was the only way to make sure both survived until they could be weaned.

16. I think one has a giant booger coming out of the nose.
Other than that, they look like hot water bottles.
