Pics from a town near Frankfurt *DIAL-UP WARNING*
Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 02:36 AM by MissHoneychurch
Those pictures are from a small town called Gelnhausen which is about half an hour away from Frankfurt (where I live).
Gelnhausen is an old town, which was a Kaiserpfalz for Frederick I (German: Friedrich (1122–June 10, 1190), called Barbarossa (meaning Redbeard). He was elected king of Germany on March 4, 1152 and crowned Holy Roman Emperor on June 18, 1155).
A Kaiserpfalz refers to castles across the Holy Roman Empire which served as temporary, secondary seats of power for the Emperor. It is a German word that is derived from a combination of these words: Kaiser, meaning "emperor", and itself derived from the name "Caesar"; Pfalz, meaning "palace", and itself derived from the Latin palatium, meaning the same.

Now, after the explaining here are some pictures of the Kaiserpfalz and some timbered houses.l

1. Ooooooo, I love the photos of the arches!
And the photos of the timber buildings look like the houses and businesses in the Swiss-German part of Switzerland. Thank you, MissHoneychurch!

7. It sure is
if you think that a lot of towns looked like that but got destroyed in WW2. We went to another town called Seligenstadt. It was similar, except there was a big monastery there instead of the Kaiserpfalz. But also the timbered houses. You could make movies in those towns.

3. I remember going to places like that...
And the cobblestones and the streets that were barely more than alleys...

I'd love to go back someday...see all the places that my parents took me and I didn't fully appreciate.

Thank you for the pictures. Brings back wonderful memories..

:hi:

4. What a lovely old town
It's wonderful not to see big box stores, chain restaurants, and the suburbs. That's all this damn country is. x(

Just beautiful. Thanks for the history of it, too. :hi:

9. Thank you
I thought I explain a bit of what is so special about this town. I mean a lot of towns have timbered houses, but not many are a Kaiserpfalz :)

21. Thank you malta
I am not discovering as much as I wish I would. Too lazy on the weekends :hide:

Isn't that normal that you always barely know what is interesting near where you live? Because you always say "Oh, I know that is there and there and I want to see it one day, but I am going to live here longer so I can do it another time" and then you won't see it at all the whole time you live there

23. That's exactly right.
I have been making an effort to get out and try to find the hidden treasures of my area. It is really hard for exactly the reason you said, I live here and it will always be there.

Thanks for sharing the great pictures.

20. Very cool.
:)

Someday I'd like to be able to travel Europe and see some historic sites. It sometimes seems that almost everyone I know has been to Europe at least once, except for me.

22. Start saving the money
it is worth it. So much to see, you will have a hard time deciding what to see.
