Has anyone tried home hair highlighting kits?
like this? http://www.lorealparis.ca/en/haircolor/index_hilightstyliste.asp

Any luck? Was it easy? How were the results?

The price of salon highlights are ridiculous here. Even the hairstyling schools are charging alot for them ($55+).

1. No, sorry.
My stylist in FL only charged me $20, so I never had to try a home one.

BTW, HI! Good to see you! :loveya:  :hi:

5. I'm fine, thanks!
:loveya:  Adjusting just fine ... only I still haven't called the new hair stylist yet. I'm WAY overdue for at LEAST a trim.

Yeah, the one in FL came to my home and charged me $20 for a cut and $20 for highlights. Well, she actually charged less than that b/c I would give her $40 and that included a good tip. She was a real sweetheart.

7. I'm sure all your kitties
will love you despite your hair length...;)

You were ok with the smell of the highlighting solution? That's good to know....it must not be too overpowering. I just starting putting some nail polish on my toes again after a number of years of not being able to. I just do it outside.

Gawd, the stuff reeks, but at least it doesn't make me as sick as it once did.

9. Don't remind me ...
that I don't see anyone else for long periods of time. (Actually, I do almost have a social life here ... compared to what it was like in FL! :D )

Yeah, the solution was OK. But I can NO WAY do the "conditioner" that comes in home kits. My stylist always told me to use my own.

Can't do the nail polish or the remover at all, even outside. And I can't go to a salon that does nails. :(

Fabric softener really gets me. That's the most disgusting God-awful stuff anyone ever invented. Had some friends over the other day and they sat against one of my pillows in the family room and I can't get the smell out. :puke:

14. Oy
I agree with you. Anything to do with laundry has terrible scents. (luckily borax doesn't)

I use a product called Biovert, and I can't smell anything at all from it (laundry and dish soap. Excellent stuff). Even Seventh Generation has a gawd awful lavender smell to it (not that lavender is bad, but their fabric softener is).

It's hard to tell anyone about not wearing scent when you're around, because so much is scented. Ugh - the hair stuff, and anti perspirants. :puke: Whenever I see 'rain or shower fresh' I think, this is going to smell like cat puke...

I hope you can eventually get the smell out.

Maybe it's time to put plastic on the furniture?:scared:

17. Well, the husband tells her right in front of me that he hates it.
It opens the door for me to tell her how toxic it is. We'll see how far we can get with that. I mean, he can't stand the smell at all.

We use the Seventh Generation Fragrance-Free detergent and dish soap and we don't use fabric softener. I can't stand Lavender. That must be pretty pukey! I've never heard of Biovert ... but will look for it.

Yeah, but cat puke washes out rather easily. The fragrance chemicals are made to get right into the fibers and last a very long time! I'm going to put the pillow outside tomorrow and see if that will help. I've already sprayed it with alcohol and water.

The furniture is leather and didn't pick up the smell at all. The vinyl furniture outside sure did, though. I really like these people and don't want to offend them. We try to spend as much time outside as possible when we see them.

 And we do keep plastic on the dining room chairs to keep the cats from scratching the upholstery.

19. I used vinegar for the longest time
as a fabric softener alternative.

Biovert is a Canadian company, I don't know if it's down your way. If it is, I highly recommend it. I've never used a grease cutting dish soap like that. I also use the dish soap for cleaning counters and floors. It's wonderful stuff.

Here's a picture of their labelling:

(I'm a visual person, and find it easier to relate to a picture than a word. Don't know if you're like that)

I think you're absolutely right to spend as much time outdoors with them. I hope you can turn her on to green products instead. Or at least fragrance free. Heck, if you want to smell nice, you can just get a fragrance free shampoo and add a drop of two of an essential oil, rather than the reeky fragranced stuff. I really think their (the company's)noses are getting up there in years, because the smells are getting stronger and stronger. They must have major olfactory fatigue.

20. I did, too.
But I really don't care if my clothes are "soft". The towels actually come out nicely if I just put them through a second rinse.

Thanks for the pic! I will look for it. It does look familiar ... perhaps I've seen it in a catalog.

I think most noses have major olfactory fatigue. The smells are getting stronger and lasting longer. :puke:

 I have to think about getting myself to bed. It sure is good to see you, though! :loveya:

21. I have a chance now
to sit down and write you a proper email, hon.

For me, it's about static cling - I get lots of shocks. Soft isn't as much of a concern as an unintentional perm.

Nighty night, dear lady! Have a wonderful sleep. :loveya:

used some excess on my hair. Works pretty well, and it's not too difficult. Basically, the hardest part is getting even amounts of hair when you stick the little crochet hook type thingies through the little holes in the cap.

Edit: this isn't specifically in response to the Loreal kit, since you seemed to be asking in general.

I believe the caps are still sold in the stores separately; perhaps that's the way to go. :hi:

4. I messed up baaaad,
but since I frequently do weird things with my hair, nobody seemed to realize that it wasn't on purpose. :lucky:

Do you have any friends or family with hair coloring experience who could help you out?

10. Lol
I love your hair! I don't think I could carry off a colour like yours, but it looks great on you. :-)

I used to colour my hair all the time, so I'm familiar with it. Highlights...I've only tried once at home, about 10 years ago. It wasn't frosting (with a cap), they were auburn highlights. Gawd, I looked like a freak. x(

6. It was bad
So very, very bad.... I'm the first to admit that the problem could easily have been user error on my part, but that Loreal highlighting kit was one of the worst hair fiascoes of my life. It's impossible to spread the color evenly with the mascara wand that they give you. Honestly, I looked like a leopard-- light brown hair with pale orange spots all over my head. It took hours and hundreds of dollars to repair. A friend of mine had the same experience with the kit that has the all-over color and highlighting kit in the same box. Maybe it would work better if you had someone help you with it?

I have used the highlighting kit with the cap and that looked pretty decent. For years, I would go to the salon every six months for professional highlights and use the cap method in between.

In any case good luck! :)

12. Oh my!
:(

Yours is the kind of concern that I have. It doesn't look very hard to do, does it? I'm sure there is some trick to it, but the key is controlling and judging the colour of the highlights, and I'm not sure if that's easy or not. (orange just doesn't cut it)

Did you find the placement of the product (on your head) was the problem? Is that why using the cap worked out so much better?

Sorry that happened to you. An expensive lesson, that's for sure.

I've had a few incidents at home, the worst being a product that is no longer on the market. It was a deep auburn colour - my ends ended up that beautiful colour, and my roots were strawberry blonde. x( (I have medium brown hair, btw)

I called the company, who said I must have done something wrong :eyes: but they ended up paying for a professional correction.

My hairdresser said they rarely ever do that; I even got my parking covered. It wasn't long after they took it off the market.

Back in the 80s, when everyone dyed their forelocks blonde.

I never was tempted to go for the rat-tail look.

(That's a borderline mullet!)

The kits like I posted?

What was your secret? Just small splices of hair? (I figure if I do that, if I screw up it won't be so noticeable...)

How are you doing this evening, SeattleGirl?
