Not sure why. But, for the record, I am 1gobluedem, who was a DU donor before I signed up as a user (my sister, Lisa M introduced me to DU). I am a public radio development director in Michigan, I have met fellow DUers Lisa M (obviously), Progmom, Misunderestimater, Ann Arbor Dem, IMModerate, Mrs. Grumpy and auntAgonist. I'm female, have three psuedo-stepchildren, a 13 year old boy and twin nine year old girls (not married but in a long-term relationship). I love Michigan football and arguing about why Michigan is the best state in the US. My forums are Michigan, Sports, the Lounge, and Hard of Hearing (I'm deaf in one ear). I'm a Democrat since birth and was ringing doorbells for Eugene McCarthy when I was 8. And, yes, I am the one who introduced Progmom to DU which should count for something I think. :7

So that's me in a nutshell. Thanks for the opportunity but I think my threads will still sink like stones. Oh well....:eyes:

At some point I might of pissed you off. I'm a bit of smart-ass on this and in real life. Some of my views jive with the majority of the people on here but then again some don't. I'm against most forms of excessive gun control. I agree with waiting periods but I think it is a fundamental right for citizens to be albe to arm themselves. I'm not a pacifist and I do think that military action is necessary sometimes. While I am not particularly relgious myself, I don't care for people bashing other people based on their beliefs. I enjoy eating meat but I see some valid arguments that PETA makes.

It's odd. There is no rhyme or reason to why some threads die. I think we sometimes just catch a few moments when everyone's looking the other way.

If there are more than 4 sex threads going at any one moment in the lounge then I don't think we notice anything else. That seems to be the critical mass for getting our hormones in an uproar. :blush:

While I was there a Jamaican man with HUGH! dreads was having his first pedicure. He was cracking me up, he had very ticklish feet and was trying not to squirm. When the pedicure was finished he was very happy. You should try it, a foot massage is often included, feels great! Plus, the chair massages your back while you sit there. Try it, really, we won't call you a girly man! :P

At the risk of sounding whiny, this is a tough place to get noticed. I have been reading DU since 2004, but just started posting in the Lounge this summer. I don't get a lot of the inside jokes and ribbing.... so I just sit here bemused instead of typing a reply. Sometimes people respond, mostly they don't. The Morning Crew is very friendly, though. I just wish I could get there early enough to participate, but I usually get there too late. I usually try to reply to threads about pets and general interest type topics.

There are a lot of inside jokes, and most of the time nobody bothers to explain them. Though, I've asked a couple of times and always been given an explanation.

There are 3 ways I think I've started talking to people.

1. I've agreed with people on serious discussions on the other boards, so we've seen each other fighting the good fight and start responding to each other. I'm PMed the occassional complement to people when I see some really good posts, and that has started some conversations.

2. Other people I met though hosting meetups so now I look for them and we talk. I'm lucky to be in NYC where there are a lot of DUers to meet.

3. I've learned how to Flirt. It wasn't a skill I think I ever hand before. (and I'm still fairly obvious and blatant about it, but people are forgiving.)

Then when people see me talking to other people they're more likely to talk to me too. It seems like having some friends here validates your ability to be a friend here, so it snowballs.

for uniform standards for guide dogs and other working animals
for tax breaks for people who keep working animals
for implementing the ADA

I did a lot rabble rousing to shape organizations into becoming more accessible. I ran disability simulations so that people without disabilities could find out what it's like for 12 or 24 hours. I made a pretty good nuisance of myself. :)

But at some point you just can't do it anymore without help. I live alone and have no transportation, so I'm cut out of the loop. :(

My writing style changes based on how much pain I'm in on a given day, and I see that on some days people respond to me a lot, and on other days people rarely respond to me. So maybe it's writing style thing.

the Latest list. That guarantees that they'll be able to see a thread fairly quickly, so they're more likely to be at the front of the discussion.

Many people also don't read long threads. They'll skim the first dozen or so, get a sense of the thread and then move on. So they don't even see the posts farther down. :(

usually when they are between 1 and 3 paragraphs long. Long enough to be interesting, but short enough to be quickly and easily digested. A lot of great posts get few responses because they're too long or too dense for many people to get through them.

You wouldn't think at DU we would have a problem with people not wanting to read, but it seems to be the case.

I was Freebird when I joined DU before I started posting in my real name. My friends at here in The Lounge have helped me to rejoin the world I withdrew from 12 years ago.

I've been married 3 times, moved from my place of birth down south with my 1st ex husband and settled in New York back in 1969. I prefer living in the country but I'm moving into the heart of a large city for this winter to avoid the snow. My stepson and my old college boyfriend live nearby so I won't be totally alone but I would make the move even if they weren't here. I ride a Honda Goldwing Trike or drive a pickup truck (most of the time). BTW I also wear a Stetson Hat and am owned by the parrot who loves me.

I don't start as many threads as I once did because I'm on a dial-up mode when I travel. x( My old Dell computer was called a dinosaur and Dell pulled a fast one while selling me a new computer = it has an express PCMI slot which the industry hasn't started making PC cards for yet. :grr:

On the plus side ~ a gallery wants to display my photography. I've always been good but I didn't know my work was sellable. Life seems to be looking quite a bit more interesting these days.

a motorcycle (balance and leg strength) or a car (sitting in those damned seats) so I've seriously considered checking out those three wheeled motorcycles. They look like a near-perfect option.

When I first moved back into my mom's house, I just had their tank on my bedroom floor. I also had the bunnies playing loose in my room. Unfortunately, my camera wasn't around, because the geckos were fascinated by the rabbits. All three were lined up staring at the rabbits and moving their heads in unison to follow the rabbits.

Both of my bearded dragons go crazy if I flick a lighter within sight of their cages. They'll start lunging towards the lighter. Total attack mode at the sight of a flame.
