1. Other people don't increase or decrease your odds.
If you buy one Powerball ticket, your odds of winning the big prize are one in 146,107,962. (Your odds of winning $3 are one in 69.)

If someone else buys a Powerball ticket with the same numbers, their odds of winning the big prize are 146,107,962. True, they'll split it with you (but if you're winning millions of dollars, who cares?). But it doesn't decrease your odds of winning.

2. The lottery is inverse communism.
Everybody voluntarily pays into a system where one wins and everyone else becomes envious.

Imagine if we all paid each other directly. Government bureaucracy would be diminished; not as much staff and systems to maintain. And we'd all be happier too, methinks.
