This was posted this in another thread. I don't want to cause a problem by starting a new thread, but I highly disagree and feel a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Here's a just a few women who breastfed their babies.

Tori Amos

Erykah Badu

Cindy Crawford

Jody Foster

Elle Macpherson

Tipper Gore

Karenna Gore Schiff

Uma Thurman

Julianne Moore

Lucy Lawless

3. Yep.

Some think it's anti-feminist and only done by ugly women or fundies. I just wanted to illustrate precisely the opposite.

9. you make my point for me
women who can afford nannies to do most of the work except when they're in public, women who can afford cosmetic surgery to put their bodies back together afterwards -- these are the pix you post

celebs, and v. rich ones

then people wonder why men have unrealistic standards of what a woman's body is about

some women are their own worst enemies

we've all seen "real world" nursing mothers and there was nothing attractive about them

indeed, it's the whole argument of the unattractive nursing mother, that they should be able to nurse in public because they aren't attractive or sexually stimulating, their battle cry is that they are a bottle for a baby rather than a toy for a man

frankly i think it's disgusting to be either one, i would like to be a real person, not a walking food bottle or a walking sex toy, but sanity is a premium this time of century i'm afraid

And I breastfed both of mine. You sound very resentful of whatever time you 'have' to give your kids. Sad.

25. How outrageously offensive
If you don't want to nurse a baby, don't. But please don't lump us nursing or ex-nursing mothers into offensive categories just because YOU choose not to do it.

I NEVER have had a nanny and worked full time until my first was 11 months old and managed to nurse without supplementing.

If you think feeding your infant int he way nature intended is disgusting, you have some major issues.

10. yes she obviously has a stylist
"real" nursing mothers don't look like that, they don't have their hair "done" before their pic is taken

20. she is so totally femme now it is scary.
I don't know what the hell happened. Who killed Xena????

I mean, it's creepy. It's more than just clothes, so the stylist thing doesn't explain it. It's her bone structure and her facial structure. You could say she just dropped about 30 pounds but it seems like something else, too.

15. but it isn't "people" being forced into a pit here, it's "women"
it is highly convenient for the man that he can just again bow out of responsibility for his own child since, after all, too bad so sad, but only the mother's boobs provide sufficient milk so she's the one who is going to be trapped in this pit for months...or years...while he goes on his merry way

"hunting" does not inconvenience a man or interrupt his career and, in fact, both sexes equally can get a gun, a license, and hunt

but only woman gets stuck with the job of baby hanging off her tit

and i am supposed to be fooled by a picture of lucy lawless all dressed up and styled in pantyhose pretending to breastfeed a baby she probably sees 30 minutes a day otherwise, these women all have nannies, christ, i'm not stupid, i know when i'm being sold a bill of goods -- that photo is priceless, it says it all about what she knows about breast-feeding, it's a role she played for the camera

19. By your logic, pregnancy is anti-feminist.
It's the woman, not the man, who is stuck with the job of carrying a child for 9+ months. It's uncomfortable under even the best of circumstances. It can kill them in the worst of circumstances. She'll be trapped in that pit for months -- morning sickness, stretch marks, perhaps bedrest (which certainly inconveniences a career), never mind the actual labor and recovery (which current technology does not allow to be completely painless). Her body will never be the same, even if she has those personal trainers and stylists. Meanwhile, the men can go on their merry way.

So what are we supposed to do?

I've got an idea -- I'll make my choices, you make yours, and I won't trot out the "anti-feminist" or "anti-progressive" label for any of the choices we make for our own families if you won't. Deal?

22. I think it's the other way around. Breast milk is free.
It's formula that you have to pay for.
I don't have kids, so I don't ever plan to breast feed, so this is my only contribution. However, it does seem to be about freedom of choice. Women were fear-mongered out of their choice decades ago by their doctors in a deal with the formula industry and alot of people got rich. Women just want their choice back. What's the big deal. If you don't want to breast feed, don't. Nobody cares. My sister-in-law didn't because she's ridden through life on her 42-D's and didn't want to mess them up. So she didn't.

14. Most of the moms from my church breastfed their babies.
That was in the 1980s and 1990s. One baby would cry, the "letdown" reflex would happen, and you would hear the sound of Velcro from nursing bras all over the church sanctuary as other babies followed.

What is with the 1950s thinking that seems to be so prevalent these days?

18. some of us have brains and would like to be free of "churches"
yes, the church has lot to explain when it comes to putting women back in their little slots

it is certainly part of the fundy mantra that a "real" woman stays home and is a slave to baby, her brain isn't good enough for real work anyway

why do we have to fight the same battles our mothers and in some cases even our grandmothers fought?

23. That's what the boobs are there for.
Don't like it, cut them off. That's the real freedom.

The point here is CHOICE, just like the choice to have babies or not to have babies. Breastfeeding is certainly more convenient, since you don't have to worry about carrying bottles, keeping them at the right temp, running out, etc. Bottle feeding is more convenient if you want more than one person to be able to do it (although that can happen with breast milk in a bottle, too), be able to have a more flexible schedule, etc.

But each is a choice and the choice each woman makes for herself and her baby IS the right one.

No matter what YOU think.
