List films that have unanswered questions in them
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 11:35 PM by bob_weaver
Plot points that are left explained in the film, mysteries that are never solved, unexplained actions of the characters, conversations that are silent or purposely unintelligible, etc. You never find out "who did it" or why something happened. (spoiler alert) One example would be at the end of Lost in Translation, they have a short conversation between themselves and you can't hear it at all. I'm sure you can think of better examples.

It's safe to say this entire thread will have spoilers.

24. from IMDB:
# Speculation abounds as to the nature of the mysterious glowing contents of the case:

* Could it be Elvis's gold suit, seen worn by Val Kilmer (as Elvis) in True Romance (1993)?
* The most persistent theory (most usually attributed to a friend of a friend who saw it posted on a message board by someone whose brother had read a report of a radio interview with Tarantino himself) is that it is Marcellus Wallace's soul. The story goes that when the Devil takes a person's soul, it is removed through the back of the head (this isn't part of any known religion, but this is what the message board posters say). When we see the back of Marcellus's head he has a Band-Aid covering the precise spot indicated by tradition for soul removal. Perhaps Marcellus sold his soul to the devil which would also explain why the combination to open the briefcase is 666.
* Quentin Tarantino has said that the band-aid on the back of Marsellus Wallace's neck had nothing to do with an allusion to the Devil stealing Marsellus's soul... but that the actor Ving Rhames had a scar on the back of his neck he wanted to cover up.
* Or could it be simply a 20-watt light bulb?
* According to Roger Avary, who co-wrote the script with Quentin Tarantino, the original plan was to have the briefcase contain diamonds. This seemed neither exciting nor original, so Avary and Tarantino decided to have the briefcase's contents never appear on screen; this way each filmgoer could mentally "fill in the blank" with whatever struck his or her imagination as best fitting the description "so beautiful". The orange light bulb (projecting shimmering light onto the actors' faces) was a last-minute decision and added a completely unintended fantastic element.
* In a radio interview with Howard Stern in late 2003, Quentin Tarantino was asked by a caller the contents of the briefcase, and he answered, "It's whatever the viewer wants it to be."

11. Auntie Em will save the day!
Almira Gulch, just because you own half the
county doesn't mean you have the power to
run the rest of us! For twenty-three years,
I've been dying to tell you what I thought
of you! And now -- well, being a Christian
woman, I can't say it!

12. I was like that with
every animal in movies when I was growing up! (and can still be!) I would drive everybody crazy asking about the dog (cat, bird etc. ) that was in one shot. I like that in real life too. I'm always worried about what happens to people's pets when something happens to them. Not that i don't care about the people, I just worry about the pets too.

18. I live about 3 hours from NOLA
I was heartbreaking. I worked a shelter set up for displaced people to bring their pets. It was so sad to see these people have to leave their pets. Most of them were able to come back and get them, but the recuse group I'm in took in one of the dogs that was never picked up. He was a wonderful dog and seem to be very well taken care of. I always wonder what the family's story was and hope that things worked out for them.

13. That scene has two all-time great shots in it.
The shot where she is walking across the bridge and looks down, and you see the churning waves down below - that shot is awe-inspiring. Then when she's seated in the chair, and the door closes, and the seams where the door were simply disappear - another "wow" moment.

29. This thread is full of spoilers; I think if you just put the movie name in
the subject line, then the unanswered element in the message, you will be OK. People who don't want to read the spoilers can just read the summary of the thread's replies (not the "View All" version) and click only on the reply they want to read.
