About 10 years ago there was a huge uproar because two girls at a school in my hometown wanted to go to the prom together — letters to the editor, editorials, lots of hate and hellfire. And they weren't gay, or at least said they weren't. They just didn't have traditional dates and, being best friends, decided to go together.

(About five years later, the principal at the same school decided to make thong underwear against the rules because he said they created a diversion. A large contingent of the female student body responded, "Stop looking at our underwear, you perv.")

6. Liberal as in no one got hassled for being openly gay.

Well, the principal was a homophobe, but the students and teachers were awesome. We always had several same-sex dates at the prom. My year (probably due to the principal's issues with the gay-straight alliance), it was announced that you'd need parental permission for same-sex dates. I would have never gotten that from my parents. However, my date was trans with a legal name & sex change (although pre-hormones at the time), so I didn't need any special permission. However, the principal had a big "D'oh!" face when we walked in.

8. Haha...well, this is what happened...

we went up to him and asked if we could get a picture with him. He turned beet red and stammered, "uh, uh...I want an 8x10 glossy of this." So on Monday morning, I left an 8x10 glossy in a rainbow frame on his desk with a note saying...

"Dear Barry,

This is my graduation present to you.

Love,
Jackie"

According to a couple of my teachers, he actually put it up in his office. Their theory was that he only did it so that people would stop calling him a homophobe all the time.

10. Well, fucking with him was just about the only thing I did in HS.

The highlight of my HS career was convincing him I was going to publish an unauthorized student publication. That was fun. I had one of those schedules where I pretty much never had anywhere to be, so I spent most of my time waging psychological warfare against him.
