1. The size, shape of the room you are putting them in, as well as the

objects in the room are both factors to consider in addition to the quality of the speakers. You dont need to use an elephant gun to hunt pigeons (dumb anlalogy but you know what I mean)I am no expert but it's the low end, i.e. explosions and stuff that you don't want to sound fake or rumbly. Check out an audio site, geeks are more than happy to help you. And if you ever test speakers in a store, it's always good to bring a cd that you are familiar with... so you can judge the sound. Why dont you google the receiver you got and find someone who has a similalr set up, I bet there is a geek with an entire site devoted to it,.

2. Great idea, zonkers.
We're in a sublet at the moment, but moving into our first home in a few weeks and are trying to figure out what we will be needing for the new space. I guess we'll wait until we figure out where everything goes before purchasing the speakers. Why is it that I use google all the time and didn't think of using it this time?

3. Glad to help. You know when you think of how many movies we've all
seen and cinemas we've been to, we are all really experts on what sounds good to us. Trust your own
ears. IMO, The best sound is has an invisible effect. You dont want to sit there while watching a movie and say, wow, great sound. The ideal set up for me would be both affordable, durable... with sound qualities that are clear and warm... and with enough of a range to handle a whisper as well as an explosion without fritzing out.

4. How picky are you, and how much do you want to spend?
Are you looking at $50, $500, or $2500 (or more)?

If you want audiophile level sound, I love the ascend acoustics speakers as a good basic selections. For music listening, a pair of 170's coupled with a descent subwoofer (they sell a good one, but I like others) will give some of the best sound available at any price. You can add another set (or two) as well as their midrange for 5.1 or 7.1.

Do some searches, there are some great audiophile level speakers out there now for less than $400 a pair (you will not find them at circuit city, etc).
