Two... TWO people from my recent past (6+ months ago) have called

One I am glad about and want to hang out with, the other not so much. Yet I feel an obligation to call both back. What's the etiquette here?

1. there's a difference between hanging out with and calling back.

personally i would extend myself for the one i want to see -- and i wouldn't for the person i don't want to see.

for me doing what makes me happy is part of being an adult.

i'm speaking selfishly here -- i.e. sacrifising for otheres is good where there is a reciprocal relationship.
but we always discriminate about who our friends are -- and that is a good thing.

2. I have this inability to refuse people my time

If someone wants to spend time with me, I almost always find myself trapped into saying yes.

then perhaps not returning the call is appropriate.

it's your life and time -- and this is not a reflection on the quality of the person.

7. Failing to return the call is a signal that you aren't interested

and it sounds like that's the signal you'd like to send.

4. If neither is an ex spouse

then I would call both back and ask if they have forks in their drawer.

The one who says no is the one that would stab you in the eye with one.

Keep talking so they can't talk much, and end the conversation (because you have to go somewhere) before they get a chance to talk about getting together.
