OU's quarterback kicked off of the team!
The Oklahoma OU. Seems he was getting just a little overpaid for that summer job in 2005.

3. Well, heh heh, it is not that he worked too much.
Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 10:21 PM by Floogeldy
He worked way to little for that $18,000 he was paid.

:wow:

4. Total fucking morons.
This is 2006, for fuck's sake. OU is way too high profile for a player and a booster to get away with this shit. I know it goes on everywhere. But in Oklahoma, everything about OU football is under a microscope.

What Mosey said.

6. i heard that this afternoon
:grr:

how totally fucking stupid. The kid could have turned pro after this year or next and gotten a nice fat contract in the nfl, but instead he had to blow it for a measley 18 grand. What an incredible waste.

And now the Sooners are down to a juco transfer or bringing paul thompson back from wide receiver, after spending all that time prepping with bomar as the QB. But I'm glad they got out in front of him and kicked him off the team.

:grr:

8. Only possible silver lining ...
Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 10:35 PM by RoyGBiv
Heupel was a JUCO transfer.

But, I suspect he was a once-in-a-lifetime sort of thing.

OnEdit : One other possibly silver lining ... I might be able to get OU-TX tickets this year. All the fair-weather fans who have been driving up prices since 2000 may go back into their shelters. Don't really care, overall, who wins at these games. The experience is what's fun.

11. I've heard that heupel is pretty high on Halzle, the juco kid, as well
but, yeah, I agree that heupel was a once in a lifetime thing. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Thompson wound up starting. I know plenty of fans thought he was horrible last year, but he only started one game, and did about as well in that game as bomar did. And that, too, with a really young supporting cast.

I think either QB could work out alright. Either way, OU will be okay as long as they have a healthy Adrian Peterson for whoever plays QB to hand off to :)

Those OU-TX games are a hell of an experience for sure. I hope you do get to go :toast:

13. Great observations, fishwax.
:)

However, believe me, I would much rather lounge in my underwear, pig out, and watch the OU vs Texas game on my TV. The alternative would be way too exhausting.

Heh. Sorry for the visual! ;)

21. haha
yeah, it can be exhausting, especially when it's an 11 a.m. kickoff, most people are hungover from the West End the night before and then trying to get another buzz on before the early kickoff, only to wind up baking in the hot october sun all through the second half. (ah, good times :))

25. I HATED the early kickoffs ...

I rememeber (well, sorta) one year that had an early kickoff. We'd driven down on Friday and were consuming the entire day, spending happy hour at our hotel's bar, then off to the West End. One in our party got lost, and unknown to us somehow found a cab, and even more amazingly managed to tell the driver where he needed to go, while I, drunk bastard that I was at the time, wandered around looking for him, screaming his name at the top of my lungs until the Dallas PD wandered over to me and asked whether I wanted to calm down or go spend the night in the Hotel Dallas County.

I chose the former. (Cool cops, btw, who actually helped us look for our friend.)

And we all eventually gave up, found our own cab, made it back to the hotel, thinking the entire way we were going to have to figure out what to tell our lost friend's mother about how he wandered off and died at an OU-TX game. When we got to our room, he was there, passed out in front of the door since he didn't have a key. We were so happy he wasn't dead that all was forgotten, and we started the party in our room all over again, some group of people from down the hall joining us, and to this day I don't remember whether they were OU or TX fans or even fans at all.

It was about 5am when we finally fell asleep.

Woke up about 3 hours later, still drunk ... somehow made it to the game on time, spent most of it wondering if jumping off the top of the stadium would fix my headache, and it was raining on and off, and we lost, and it was one of the best times I ever had in my life. :-)

17. Good point ...

At this early stage, I'm pulling for Thompson myself. I don't think he was given a proper chance at it, and the game in which he played was not a good test of his talent, especially since he didn't get a chance other than that.

As for the game, I'll probably have to wait a year. The fair-weather fans won't give up all-of-a-sudden. (Pisses me off, really. I was there, cheering on my team, through all the bad years. When they got good, all the idiots with the connections suddenly decided they could be fans again, and the price of a ticket went from face price to several hundred dollars. At least I got to see the 2000 game before that happened.)

Anyway, my daughter has been offered a band scholarship to OU and will probably end up taking it. I've told her she can count on me to help her in whatever way I possibly can as long as she remembers her dad when they get the chance to get tickets. :-)

20. Congrats to your daughter
that's very cool. Will she be in the Pride?

I know what you mean about the fairweather fans. I went to every home game of the John Blake era, for the love of god, and suddenly after '00 I couldn't afford to go to games anymore :grr:

But I guess the flipside is that they're on TV more often :)

24. Has to try-out ...

She's been offered the scholarship, but everyone in the Pride has to try out first.

She's a young woman who plays the baritone sax, which is unusual, and she's very good at it. I suspect she'll make it ... and I will burst with pride of my own when I hear Boomer Sooner with her in the band.

We had similar experiences ... I even liked Blake. He was just in the wrong position. I mean, the team that won in 2000 was recruited and initially coached almost entirely by him. Stoops got the benefit of that talent and atmosphere. I think Stoops is a better coach overall, but it wasn't really *his* team that beat up on Texas after so many long years of near misses and horrid losses.

There is always TV ... and I finally have a job that lets me watch the games without having to ask off. :-)

Aside from the OU-TX game, that was the only one that worried me.

I think you're about 20 steps ahead at this point. :-)

9. For OU fans, fishwax, a bright side.
Remember, Paul Thompson won out against Bomar for the starting position during Spring and Fall practice, 2005. Thompson even started the first game of the season. A lot of people think Thompson got screwed.

In addition, Thompson has always performed better than Bomar in scrimmages, and OU's offensive coordinator, Kevin Wilson, LOVES PAUL THOMPSON and thinks he is better suited for his offense, as opposed to Chuck Long's offense.

So they say.

12. I kind of felt that about thompson too
I know he didn't light it up in that TCU game, but there were a lot of dropped balls, and he was the starter for all of one half before being discarded. And the juco guy is supposed to be pretty good too, and I think OU will be okay either way, as long as Adrian Peterson is healthy enough to take the handoff :)

7. As I said ...

If Bomar gets his shit together, OU will have a good season.

Bomar did not get his shit together.

Screw 'im. Glad he's gone. I'll live with the fallout of a bad year if it means not allowing this crap to happen. Always felt uncomfortable with him, no matter his talent, and this sort of thing shows why.

I do not want to go back to the Switzer years when players drove brand new sports cars and sported more gold ... as freshmen ... than I could afford in my lifetime.

10. Bomar never impressed me.
Last season: Ten touchdown passes and ten interceptions. He never proved himself to me, never calmed down, and always played a little squirelly. A lot of OU fans were putting there faith in what Bomar could become, maybe.

It was all speculation.

Remember Steve Davis (stepped into the starting position after the starter got booted off of the team). The rest is history.

18. Yeah, that hurts a bit ...

But it's deserved.

I do not like players who screw around with the rules, so whatever criticism is coming, let it come.

I will say, however, that it speaks well of the program that they dumped Bomar rather than trying to cover it up.

I am flying back west for the game. Hoping for some revenge after that pathetic showing the Ducks made in the Holiday bowl.
