It's an oven, but at least it's a convection oven.
I'm out on the screen porch with two fans going (one above, one in front).

And it's not bad, even for someone as heat-intolerant as I am.

For half an hour at a time, at least.

1. You wanna come over?
It's about 75 here. Can you pick up a six-pack on the way?

(Sorry about the heat there--I'm no good at all when it gets like that.)

2. Sure. It's early, so I'll make it a twelve-pack and a jug of Cuervo.
Actually, we do have central air in the house, and I also have R2D2 in my office. I just don't like to be inside in the evening. So I do half an hour on the screen porch, then a few minutes inside to cool down.

But not during the day. If the A/C broke, I'd be spending the day in the bathtub.

3. Amazing how hot it can get in CT, isn't it?
When I purchased my first car, a 1980 Pontiac Sunbird for $5200, my dad said "this is CT, you won't need air conditioning".

:grr:

I busted him about that for years. I can't imagine not having A/C in this heat. I saw a program on the local news tonight where Meals on Wheels was delivering fans to the elderly with no A/C. Heartbreaking.

6. I never had air conditioning in my car or house until 1991. I'd not do
without either anymore.

People forget that southern Connecticut has Mid-Atlantic weather, not New England weather. We're more like Philadelphia than Boston.

9. My parents always had A/C in the house,
but I didn't until my third apartment in 1985. I didn't give a rat's ass about the electric bill. It was wonderful to sleep with the windows closed and a blanket over me with that thing blowing.

After spending too much time in apartments without A/C, showering at midnight and laying in the bed with the fan blowing directly on me, it was a true luxury that became a necessity.

5. Fabulous. I'll cook off some simple syrup and get some salt & lime.
Glad to hear about the A/C! When I last lived out there (in MA--we moved back here early last year) all we had was a little A/C unit in the bedroom.

It made life bearable to be able to sleep at night, but those hot days...ecch! There's only so much one can get done, alternating between the bedroom and the cellar.

Enjoy the evening air; it's bound to cool down a bit soon.

11. My office is in the house. With all those computers and monitors
and printers, I HAVE to have A/C.

I still don't understand why heat in the winter is considered a necessity, but cooling in the summer is considered a luxury.

14. Catch this.
Mike and I aren't working in the same office any longer because we have an extra bedroom now that Grandpa is gone. It was fine for a while, but we noticed over the year that Grandpa lived with us, we were both on the phone too much to make it comfortable for the other.

So, Mike moved his office into what was Grandpa's room, which was our son's room.

It has been so incredibly hot here, we had to put in a portable air conditioner to make the room bearable because of the computer, printer, etc.

The sun absolutely beats on that window in that room and it is an egress window because of its location. It gets so hot in there, I can't tell you.

the ell, so the Central AC doesn't get into there much (cold air is hard to move becausse it's heavy).

I had been using a little window unit, but this year one of the people Mrs R works for gave her one of those "portable" units that has the hoses and looks like R2D2. It's more than twice as powerful as the little window unit, and I can park it right next to me. I really like it.

(PS: Because it blows the cold air straight up, it's also great for the periodic "Pit Refreshment," you just hold the bottom of your shirt open over the cold-air stream. Oh, yes.)

18. It has changed the temperature on the second floor
His office is next to the laundry room, and with six people the dryer is always going. When I come out of my office on the third floor, (which I keep like a meat locker), I don't get that warm air that I used to.

And, I think it has helped with our central air bill, because I can turn the air down (up?) at night and keep the one in the office going.

Not this month of course, it has been horrible here.

33. No choice.
This is a planned community and we can't have clotheslines. A major disappointment when we closed on the house.

But, in all reality, the clothes probably wouldn't dry in this humidity.

34. Hey, I'm a native Yankee, so you can just guess the chances that I'd
ever buy a house in a "planned community."

Damned if I'd let anyone besides me and Mrs R (and the town's zoning laws, of course) tell me what I can and can't do at my house.

Though that's not a criticism; I'm sure you had a good reason to buy there.

36. LOL. Actually, we did.
Most of the housing here is in subdivisions which have home owner covenants and when we lived in Monroe, (in a condo, but it wasn't cheap) we lost everything due to one speculator who bought all these units, couldn't sell them and went belly up.

When we found out that the community association actually had a financial responsibility to the homeowners to keep the property values in line with other communities, we were like "where do we sign?".

Nothing changes things like losing the $75,000 equity you had built up in your previous home and having to start from scratch.

to Wisconsin, and when they do, we're going to have to visit them, aren't we?

Especially because they're moving to run a dairy farm (What else, it being Wisconsin), and the little guy would LOVE to go see that.

I'm not sure why they blew the siren, but it was definitely the tornado siren. I have two sirens each a block away from my house in two different directions. I KNOW when the sirens go off! We had a severe thuderstorm warning, but I never did hear about a tornado per se. But spotters here are pretty jumpy. About 6 months before I moved here, 7 people were killed in a tornado a little west of here (Utica, IL--been on "Storm Stories" a bunch of times.) They don't take any chances!

But I'm fine, the critters are fine, all's well. And now that the front has passed, it's much cooler!

Thanks for caring!

Sorry.

We just decided two day ago that we're going to go to Canada for a week, so I've been beating myself brainless to get caught up on work.

You know, with the layout of your house, one window air conditioner in the living room would cool all the rooms. I hope you have one.

You know I'm not big on formality; I just wanted to make sure it got there, as there were some pretty nasty reviews on Amazon. Did he pick something fun out, yet? Do tell! :)

Where in Canada are you guys headed? I hope that you all have a great time. :bounce: Don't kill yourself working before you go, though!

One window AC and two fans, is exactly what we have going on. It's more than enough to take the humidity out of the house... even if we've only got it set at 76 (so it's actually about 80 in the house), the difference in the humidity is bliss to walk into! It's nice to be able to cool the whole house with that, too.
