I won!! I am now an elected official
Precinct committeeman for the County Democrats. :woohoo: :woohoo:

And I got 93% of the vote! :bounce:

Of course, I was running unopposed and there were less than 20 votes. :D

Anybody else a comitteeperson? Does anybody even know who their committee person is? I'm not sure I ever noticed it on a ballot before. I really did not learn about it until the last election when I volunteered at the local County Office. So much for my civics classes.

18. as I said
we have two per precinct - a PCM and a PCW. Precinct Committee Man and Precinct Committee Woman. So we have equal representation, if all offices are filled. I am not sure if every state has the same structure though.

23. Not in Michigan
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 12:04 AM by ih8thegop
In Michigan, each precinct gets a number of precinct committee persons (or Precinct Delegates) based on how well the party did in the last election in that precinct.

I am one of three candidates for three spots, and all three of us are men. Feel the testosterone :evilgrin::evilgrin::evilgrin::evilgrin:

31. Ah answers the question I asked below
that seems fairer, although it would also lead to a bigger board, and, in your case, one which is unbalanced in favor of males. In my case, our small precinct is over-represented. Not only that, but we have many precincts with no representation. We had a committee which was trying to find people, but it did not get anything done. I should make that my first project in the next month. Finding people for the neighboring precincts.

10. and being in Iowa
you probably get to meet all the Democratic Presidential candidates. I was in Iowa in 2000 but not part of the party machine until I drove to Charles City to hear Vilsack and he encouraged us to goto work and I did phone banking for election day. Prior to that I was only writing the occasionaly LTTE for the Register or the Mason City Globe Gazette. Such as:

Dear Editor,

I notice with some dismay that all the letters I have read have been pro-Bush. Are no Gore supporters writing, or are no Gore supporters being printed? Let me at least write for Gore and see if it is printed or suppressed.
First, I will give 520 billion reasons not to vote for Bush. That is the amount of money that the top 1% gets from the Bush tax cut. The public needs this money much worse than the millionaires who 'earn' it. Four percent of that tax cut goes to the bottom forty percent, compared to 40% to the top 1%. Such an unequal distribution is not inevitable in an income tax cut, but a result of Bush's
desire to cut the top rates which most Americans don't pay. Only a cut at the bottom is for all taxpayers.
One of the pro-Bush letters mentioned "It's a Wonderful Life" which is also my favorite metaphor because the Republican party is the party that serves the Potters of this world and tilts the field even more in their favor. Gore promises to fight for the George Baileys and the Ernies and Berts, and I trust him far more than I trust Bush's 'compassion'.
Bush promises to end partisan bickering, and I believe that because his own party will run everything. Unless the Democrats filibuster and appoint special prosecutors (and they probably can't as a minority) the Republicans will compromise with the Democrats by allowing the Democrats to do what the Republicans want - help the rich people and the corporations make things that much harder for ordinary working people. Their Iowa platform includes abolishing the minimum wage doesn't it?
Gore proposes to use the imaginary surplus to reduce the debt and shore up social security which is surely a much more noble plan than using it to line the pockets of the wealthy. Surely Bush's tax cut is the last thing we should do if there is no surplus, and I still think that most of the surplus comes from Social Security and needs to be saved for my imaginary retirement.
I have mostly spoken against Bush instead of for Gore, but it is usually easier to be sure of what you do not want. A Bush presidency quite frankly scares me, whereas I am sure that Gore will be safe based on the last eight years. Eight years ago I did not see that much difference between Bush and Clinton, but now there is enough between Bush-2 and Gore to go with Gore.

12. truth to tell
I would just as soon have somebody else do the job. I'm not sure how good I am at it. I am not very sociable. But I figure that I am better than having the position vacant. I could still work in the office or on the website or on lit drops and poll watching. I do not think I will do phone banking any more. I don't think it helps, and besides I have phone anxiety.

It is possible that you do not have one. Who knows how long my post was vacant before I took it. I still have no precinct committeewoman  Politics is just like real life.

You could always run in 2008. We do not have "committeepersons" though (or PCP as I said above - Precinct Committee Person) we have committee men and committee women - one each per precinct. Except alot of the slots are vacant, and many others are filled by husband and wife teams.

26. do you have an opponent
or are you a shoo in? I was kinda afraid that I would get less than 5 votes. Maybe I should get more figures. How many Democrats voted in my precinct? I myself left three blank on my ballot since they were running unopposed. There might have been a dozen who did not vote on my position at all. I think there was only one real election for us in this primary and that was in the infamous state school board.

I will have to run every two years, just like a state rep. They call them judges there? That is a sexually neutral term, but it sounds so harsh and judgemental, like voters are going to bring their campaign lawsuits before you. :scared:

Congrats to you as well.

35. What happens is if no one runs against you, you are appointed by the
county. This is the 3rd time no one was interested so I will keep the job, someone has to do it.

I don't know why the term judge is used but I do have a lot of power on election day.

Do you have to hire your own crew to work the election, if so better get started.

Good luck, we need more people working the elections.

37. Is that a poll judge or election judge?
That is separate from what I do, although my parents work at the polls on election day, in another state. As a poll watcher for about half the day last election I had to appreciate them - they put in long days.

I am an official in the County Democrat Party, representing my precinct on the board, and also trying to contact the people in my precinct to make sure they will get to the polls on election day. Very important in a non-presidential year when turnout is lower. An election can be decided not by the will of the people, but by whichever machine has the most activists to get their people to the polls. So I am happy that the Republicans have nobody for my precinct, but last time I saw a Republican van in my precinct on election day, so they may have poll watchers.

39. I am a precinct judge and precinct chair, there is a difference.
I am a judge in my own precinct so that makes me a precinct chair, a member of the executive committee.

If I could find someone to take the precinct chair job, I could just be a precinct judge only. I don't like attending the many meetings I have to attend. I really rather just hold the elections, that is enough for me.
