STOCK ISLAND, Fla. -- Wildlife officials, Wednesday, were hunting down a teenager they said shot a protected fish.
Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were looking for a teenage boy they said shot a Goliath grouper with a speargun Sunday afternoon at a marina on Stock Island.
The Goliath grouper is protected from harvest in Florida.
Marina employees reported seeing the teen in the water with a speargun. One worker said the boy told him he didn't know what he shot. The boy ended up dropping the fish and sped away on a stolen bike.
The teen faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of a protected species.
