Poll question: Choose a mascot for the Green Party
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 11:11 PM by ashling
Way back in the days of Tweed and Tammany Hall, political cartoonist Thomas Nast, drew a donkey to represent the Democrats and an Elephant to be a metaphor for the Republicans. Despite the denigration intended by those symbols at the time, we have proudly taken the donkey to be our mascot.

So, since the Green Party seems insistent on being a force for progress or mischief, what animal mascot should we peg the Greens with?

I thought about a snake in the grass; a chameleon: changes color depending on who its taking money from; Tic bird :symbiotic relationship with elephants, Red billed oxpecker (look it up!): same as tic bird; Remora (also known as sucker fish.

7. Which invertebrate will be the new mascot
for the Democratic party?

Not wanting the Greens to take part in the electoral process is akin to Joe LIEberman being so upset that someone DARED to run in the Democratic primary against him.

Either we support democracy or we do not.

8. A-fucking-men
Nobody's entitled to my vote just because they're Joe Schmo D-CA. I'll vote for the person who I think best for the job, be they Dem or Green. If the Rs ever run somebody who isn't a complete fucktard (unlikely in the extreme presently, but who knows years from now?) I'll give that person due consideration. That's just how democracy works.

For that matter if we offer our slavish devotion to the party, we shouldn't complain when they don't serve our interests and court our vote. After all they know we'll be there and voting dem no matter what, so we lose leverage. We still have a little voice in that scenario due to campaign money, but it's not enough.

23. Don't EVEN get me started there
I mean now that we all know that the Republicans are paying for Greens to get on the ballot (just google Rick Santorum Green Party) I pretty much find the party repugnant that they would crawl into bed with the Republican Party just to get on the ballot (even Rick said he did it because 3rd Parties benefit incumbants AND the candidate admits it too)

28. Rupert Murdoch hosted a fundraiser for
Hillary Clinton

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/05/09/politics/main1600694.shtml

Conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch will host a fundraiser for liberal New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, the Financial Times reports.

The mating ritual of the unlikely allies has been under way for months. Clinton set political tongues to wagging last month by attending a Washington party celebrating the 10th anniversary of Fox News, the cable news channel owned by Murdoch.

10. Not an animal, but this:

It's even the right color.

Not that I've much time for many politicians with (D) after their names, either...here's one for them:

Also the right color (the fluorescent lights add a blue tinge to the yellow, itself very appropriate)

In many ways I'd probably vote Green if I thought it'd make a difference. When I voted in another country I voted for the third party, the difference being that there the third party was a viable one. I do resent Darth Nader for his egocentric (and, frankly, kind of psychotic) way during the 2000 runoff and will never forget that the self-serving idiot said something like that he didn't care if the Republicans won because they're not really any different than the Democrats (a point, to an extent, but there remain vast differences in philosophy between the two parties) and because it'd teach America a lesson...well, thanks, you megalomaniacal f***knuckle, and I hope you are happy that so many dead Americans, Iraqis, and others got taught such a potent lesson regarding what happens when you let neocons take over the world.

I'd probably be open to voting Green locally, if I liked the candidate, but for the big ones I know I need to curb my idealism enough to be pragmatic and vote for whoever has a chance of keeping this country (or getting this country, at this point) out of the hands of Republicans, and that's the Democratic party for now and possibly for always. Yes, people who voted Green basically handed the Dark Side some key parts of the 2000 electorate (though who knows how much cheating contributed by comparison), and I chose not to be among that number because even then I knew that every vote was going to matter on this one, but the fault for that ultimately rests with unforgiveable failure on the Democratic side of the aisle. The D-politicians have let us down and they continue to do so. But they are still the only real political and institutional hope the US and the world has. Basically, it sucks.

It's the elephant. Based on what's happening in Pennsylvania, the Green Party is bought and paid for by the Republicans.
