What's the most overrated classic rock song?
Here's some of mine:

Stairway to Heaven- Zeppelin
Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)- Floyd
Satisfaction- the Stones
Sunshine of Your Love- Cream
Light My Fire- the Doors
Hotel California- Eagles
Purple Haze- Hendrix
We Will Rock You- Queen (actually, I think they're overrated period).

Admittedly, some of the songs I'm talking about are great in their own right, but it drives me nuts that DJs have continued to play them to death over the course of 30 years, more or less.

Yours?

7. I don't know...
I think "Desperado" is pretty good, but most of their other stuff is just black-hole-of-the-seventies garbage.

3. Free Bird
I would not inlude Purple Haze, though - that's an excellent song that has deserved its play.

9. Yes, however
I think it is inferior compared with most of Hendrix' stuff, such as "Bold as Love", "Are You Experienced", or "Gypsy Eyes", tracks that hardly ever get played.

10. In that sense, then yes, you are correct
I think Machine Gun is that should have been top on the list. The long live one.

13. Everything on your list-by degrees
plus "Free Bird" by Lynard Skynard. I also agree that over-playing is what has ruined them.

17. "Dice" I would disagree with
It's far from overplayed, and it's a great example of the Stones at their 70s heights. I've seen them perform it three times, and each time it got better for me.

15. "Satisfaction" may be the most overplayed song
of all because not only does it get overplayed on classic rock stations, but also on oldies stations. Not that it's a bad song, but along with other oldies like "Dancing in the Street" and "Surfin' USA" there's a certain point where it seems like the public as a whole would stop responding favorably to hearing good songs played ad nauseum. Maybe I just listen to the radio too much...

I'm gonna defend the Eagles here, though. Other than "Hotel California", I really don't hear any of their songs played all that often on classic rock stations. Maybe it's just the stations around where I am. And other than "Life in the Fast Lane" and "Heartache Tonight", I'm usually glad to hear their stuff on the radio. Different strokes for different folks and all that, I guess.

To me, the most overplayed songs on classic rock radio are just pretty much anything by George Thorogood or AC/DC. The stations down here play something by one of them at least once an hour it seems, and since so many of their songs sound similar it's like hearing the same song over and over constantly. Just my take, of course...

18. I never really liked AC/DC
It seems to me that every one of their hit songs is the same screaming, pseudo-Satanistic, over-sexualized waste of three good minutes.

As for George Thoroughgood, he's okay to listen to once in a while, but there are sometimes when I feel like driving the car off the nearest cliff if I hear "I'm bad to the bone...." one more time.

16. Drift Away
I am so tired of hearing that song. I rarely tune into pop radio; but every freaking time I do, they play it.

19. We're talking classic rock here
Though I have to say that it's one of the most annoying, overplayed pop songs there are.

21. "Born to be Wild", "American Woman", "All Right Now"
I fucking despise these songs. They are second and third rate bullshit but are considered classic and great.

Every one of the songs you mentioned are great songs that are simply overplayed. I'm pleased when "Stairway" comes on my mp3 player now because since I never listen to terrestrial radio, I rarely hear it.
