Mother Arrested For Leaving 5 Y.O. Son In Hot Car While She Partied

A Minneapolis mother said she knew it was wrong to leave her 5-year-old son sweltering in her sport-utility vehicle outside a bar where she was celebrating her 25th birthday, according to a child neglect charge filed Monday.

Keverly L. Hampton, a Minneapolis woman who gave a Faribault, Minn., address when she was booked into jail early Friday, told the boy to stay in the car and not talk to anyone, said a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.

The boy had been in the vehicle outside Gabby's Saloon and Eatery at 1900 NE Marshall St. for at least 20 minutes early Friday before someone notified police. It was 80 degrees at the time, the complaint said.

A passerby saw the boy sitting on the front center console. For relief, the windows were down about half an inch, the complaint said.

Police have said that he was "dripping with sweat and drinking water" when an officer let him out of the unlocked SUV. Although security at Gabby's paged for Hampton to return to her vehicle, she didn't make it back there until almost an hour later, the complaint said.

Police Capt. Rich Stanek said Friday that the boy was placed in protective custody.

Hampton is scheduled to make her first court appearance Tuesday.

That woman's very lucky her kid didn't die or get hurt, that he didn't put the SUV in gear, that he didn't unlock the door and take off, that nobody took him or the vehicle... So many things could have gone horribly wrong.

7. People should have to pass a test before they procreate

you need licenses for driving, hunting, even marriage. But anyone can make a baby. It takes a mother, or a father, or maybe a village to raise it.

There are young moms I know that leave their young kids home alone in front of the TV to go run errands. I hope I never have kids.
