The mystery of the missing money -- any ideas?
About a week ago, I went to pay for something at the shop in the lobby of my building, and realized the $15 that was in my purse that morning was gone. It was there when I entered my office building, and gone before I left that day.

We have a very secure office - passcards needed to enter the building, to get to our floor on the elevator, and to get into our offices. We have only about 80 employees, mostly long-term and cleaning people who have also been here for years. We ask and borrow $5 back and forth between each other all the time, so if anyone needed money all they would have to do was ask.

Yesterday, I opened my top desk drawer, and there was $15, sitting on top of the calculator that I had used Friday. Believe me, that $15 wasn't there when I left the building Friday afternoon.

So why would someone take $15 our of my purse, and then leave it in my top drawer? Why not put it back in my purse? Or ask?

1. Is there any way the money could have been found and placed there
by a cleaning person? Perhaps it had fallen under your desk? I'd like to think it's an honest person finding money and putting it somewhere relatively secure than someone "borrowing" it without asking and then returning it. Unfortunately, from what I've experienced, I've learned not to trust people so IIWY, I'd keep my purse locked in a drawer.

2. Actually, that IS possible
That's how our cleaning people behave here.

The only weird thing is I keep coupons and money in the same pocket as my purse, and all the paper was still there - only the money was missing.

But you're right - your explanation is more logical than someone borrowing it and returning it.

3. I hope that puts your mind at ease
I've been in the uncomfortable situation of having to report 2 co-workers & a superior for theft and saw those who were "borrowing" then eventually returning money to our registers lose their jobs. The "borrowing" was only the tip of the iceberg with them but it was definitely the red flag that alerted me to a problem when I first went there to work.

It's always best to look at all logical explanations. If it should happen again though..you may have a problem co-worker.
