3. last month it was
65 bucks, but I know this months' is going to be over 100 bucks, easy...we have three AC window units, and use them sparingly, usually at night...we endure during the day, with a couple of fans...during the winter, our electric bill is around 40 bucks, or less...

And this is the second month it's been $400+. Usage was 3034 Kilowatt hours. But it has been really hot & humid here.

5. man...
our house is a bit bigger, must have the central AC on all the time...heaven knows, if I had central air I would abuse the hell out of it. At times, I flirt with the notion, of buying a huge, deep chest freezer, and sleeping in it, during the summer months. I'm from Alaska, and the heat/humidity of SW Missouri, kills me...literally, I can't do much of anything outside, without feeling, well...sapped of energy, or being drenched in complete sweat.

10. Hubby and I are both heart patients,
so we do keep the Central Air on all the time. It never cools off that much at night anyway. I don't cook anything that has to be baked in the oven because it heats up the house too much. I keep the blinds closed all the time to keep the heat out. And it will be hot here in Dallas until well into November. The humidity is so bad I can't even breathe when I go outside. But the worst part is, some days even with the AC going all day long, it gets up to 78 in the house during the hottests part of the day no matter what the thermostat is set on.

32. Check and see if there's a discount you can get

from your electric company. If both you and your husband require more electricity for medical reasons,
then you should be able to get a reduced rate. You may have to get notes from your doctors stating so.

I know we have such a discount here in SoCal.
Check into it!

Good luck.

It's been hot & humid here as well. My house is bigger than your's & I keep my central AC set 75°.

My highest bill last year was $120 & $93 so far this year.

Edit to add:

I just checked, I used 1191 KWH.

12. Wow...that's insane.
Before I moved back home my electricity was about $18/month.

I know at my parent's house it's around $350, but the house is 3,200 sq. feet, we're running central air, several large aquariums & reptile tanks 24/7 and we have a pool. For a smaller house, it seems like you're paying an awful lot.

... 3300 sq ft and I used 2450 kwh last month, it was HOT here in Dallas.

But I'm an energy miser, we run our thermostats never lower than 80, make everyone shut off their computers every night, have almost all flourescent lighting, etc.

on edit: oh, the bill was $340, the highest I've ever had. It was higher even though I used 150 kwh less than the same month last year.

14. What? $446.08?
My last electric bill was for $44.54 for the month of June and I had my A/C running full tilt! 662.00 kWh consumption. Why is electricity so expensive where you live? I think that when I receive my next bill, I will refrain from my usual bitching about the expense.

Wow.........

16. About $93.00. But there was a rebate of
$18.00 or so for something, so it would normally have been $110-$115. I just signed up now for my electricity to come from 100% renewable sources so my bill will now go up about $15.00 per month. Our house is 1500 square feet and we use two window units for a/c. It has been a VERY hot summer in southern MN!!!!

18. Wondering what it will be
I just moved to a new flat. The old place had all utilities included with the rent, though I was pretty conscientious about wasting energy. They said electric should be $20-30. I only use air conditioning for sleeping, and am fine with a fan for the rest of the day. Keeping the flat closed and dark during the day retains some of the sleep time coolness.

19. I'm home all day. I never use A/C until its about 2pm....
then I use it until 7 or 8 pm...nites are usually cooler... then we use fans. Unless my kids are home, that's how I do it. Yes, I can walk around with very little on, and dunk my head under the faucet ...wet head all day long it really helps. Good diet too. Being 370/mth budgeted, I can't imagine running it more than that. Now these current three days, with kids home (they closed camp because of heat warning)... I'll be full power by 1pm... and until the kids go to bed. Their room has the A/c on every nite... they are asthmatic.

Renting an apartment that includes the utilities in the rent was the best decision I've ever made. Not quite as good as owning my own place, but I'd be broke after paying a bill like that.

Just sit there in paradise and mock us fools paying UNBELIEVEABLE utility prices here. Hell, we must deserve it. We share the blame for allowing the filth that runs congress to take office and make policy.

$20 a month would be soooo sweet. I'd love to settle for $200. I'm frankly scared. We have a big, old, leaky house and its hotter than hell in central Mississippi in August. Its gonna be rough.

29. $169 for a one-bedroom apartment
About 500-600 square feet. The previous bill was $144 and the month before that was $140. I've been running the a/c since April non-stop because it's Texas and too damn hot inside otherwise. I think my particular a/c unit leaks though, since they have added coolant at least twice in the last year. It is also old and probably less efficient than a new one would be but I doubt I can get the apartment complex to replace it.

And that's only for a few hours. But I expect it will be over $300/mo budgeted pretty soon.

I just got it yesterday. I was expecting much worse. We have about 2400 sqaure feet, but we keep the thermostats at 79 degrees, and have our west and south facing windows covered in that reflective film.

http://www.gilafilms.com/Residential/residential-window-film.htm

The reflective film has helped enormously, especially in our upstairs bedrooms. We also have switched out all of our light bulbs, and are diligent about turning off computers, lights, televisions, etc. when we leave whatever room we are in.

Just by switching out all our light bulbs, we've noticed that all of our electric bill are consistanly $30 less than the same months last year.

47. $23.14 -- Avista Utilities
Living in the Pacific NW, AC is more of a luxury than a necessity. My daylight basement actually stays pretty cool even on these brutal 90+ degree days and combined with 30% humidity it can get pretty rough! I always tell myself I'm putting in central air before next year. And I always don't.

It's gonna get down into the upper fifties tonight so I need to make sure the comforter is handy. I will need it before morning.

1900 square feet. We keep the air on 77 during the day, and 73 at night. We literally live in the dark. No one is allowed to turn lights on between 7AM and 8PM. Blinds are always shut. Computer is off when not in use. I let the laundry pile up. And we still have this ridiculous bill. I'm considering getting someone to come look and see if something is wrong with the A/C or insulation. I just switched to efficient light bulbs yesterday. The house is only five years old. I used to live in the middle of the freakin' MOHAVE DESERT and never paid this much for a bill.
