28. That's my favorite movie ever.
So, of course it's my favorite end of the world movie.

George C. Scott is genius in that film.

"Gee, I wish we had one of them doomsday machines."

"I... I don't know exactly how to put this, sir, but are you aware of what a serious breach of security that would be? I mean, he'll see everything, he'll... he'll see the Big Board!"

5. When you posted this
"When Worlds Collide" came to mind - (Hey, I'm psycho, er psychic, ask me anything) - although "Dr Strangelove" is my most favorite movie of all genres.
We were asked at a work training session to name our favorite movies, and among all the "Beaches" "Beaches" and "Beaches" was one "Dr. SL."

8. On the Beach is the best one..(maybe the first nuclear one)
I saw it as a kid during th "Cuban Missile Crisis".. we were in lockdown on our airforce base.. full alert...and planes took off round the clock.. as a nervous pre-teen, I wasn't sure I would make it to my teens :scared:

32. There was a remake? I have only seen the Fred Astaire, Gregory Peck
Tony Perkins, Ava Gardner one.. a true classic...and understated too.. It's a "thinking person's" movie..

of course, modern people have never seen a shade pull like that and probably only have seen coke bottles at a museum :)

Alexander was outstanding.

Imagine having to sew your own kid into a sheet to bury her. :scared:

I've heard the British "Threads" was just as gritty, but I haven't seen it. Should check Netflix for it right now.

Edit: Kevin Costner was in "Testament." I think it was his first film role.

by the Amelie & City of Lost Children crew.

also:
Mad Max
Planet of the Apes series
Omega Man

Dawn of the Dead (I think it counts - and I prefer the original)

I love a lot of these kinds of movies actually - does that say something about me?? Heck, I even enjoyed Water World on some level, as awful as it was...

19. "Last Night" (with Sandra Oh) is really haunting
Shouldn't watch when you're depressed - about the last 6 hours of the world, when everyone knows it's been coming for a while. With an odd cameo by Geneiveve Bujold.

51. Man, how did I forget this great film?
I love "Last Night". A superb character driven story. Sandra Oh (from "Grey's Anatomy") is especially wonderful. I liked the fact that it's never explained why the world will end...like you said, it's a given that it will end in 6 hours (although one clue was the fact that it was bright daylight at 11PM in the movie)

Cheesy Canadian production, with Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames. It also features cameos by Tom Savini and Ken Foree (the "star" of the original version).

Love it.

39. Donnie Darko.
True story: I caught that late one night while suffering from insomnia. I saw it was coming on at twelve and, since I'd heard it was a neat little sci-fi movie, decided to catch the first fifeteen minutes of it. So I finally get to bed at around three AM. And for awhile I'm just lying there asleep thinking about the movie when there's an enormous explosion and the whole house shakes and I can hear people's car alarms going off miles down the road.

There was an article in the paper about it a few days later, some people think it was the sonic boom from a meteorite, others think it was a freak bolt of lightning. I don't think it was the latter.

One of the three or four books of his that I didn't feel guilty reading and a damn fun watch on the small screen...

Trivia: It was the first Stephen King novel adapted for the screen after King was able to reclaim all pre- and post-production creative rights to his work.
