Phil Ochs appreciation thread
I found a few old video clips of him on YouTube and thought I'd share with the lounge

If you had to pick a favorite Ochs song, which one would it be? Personally I don't think I could choose a favorite because he wrote so many good songs but I would have to say "I ain't Marching Anymore", "The Power And The Glory" and "When I'm Gone" are among my favorites

1. Thanks for sharing those.
I love Phil Ochs, even though his time was way before mine.

So many great songs to choose from. Aside from the obvious ones, I really like Ringing of Revolution, We Seek No Wider War, When in Rome, and Crucifixion.

When I'm Gone... That song makes me cry, every time.

5. Kansas City Bomber
"Topical" songs are boring. As Dylan famously said, "you're not a songwriter, you're a journalist."

Now roller derby, on the other hand... THAT's a subject for high art.

11. What's wrong with doing topical material.
If it's done well, it's not boring, but that's true of any song. I don't understand why Dylan would criticize topical songwriting (if that's what he was doing,) since he's done it throughout his career.

Is it a crime that music be about something, that not everything is Burt Bacharach and Phil Spector girl groups?

6. He wrote so many good ones, it's hard to say.

But I guess I'd say, other than "I Ain't Marching Anymore," my favorite would be "Is There Anybody Here?"

He wrote so many songs that really kick butt.

7. His sister carries on his legacy through "Song Nights". . .

As for my favorite song of his, I like too many of them to pick just one. Sorry.

8. I love Changes the best
But I'm hard pressed to find a Phil Ochs song I don't like. That Noyes poem he put to music, The Highwayman, I guess I can live without that.

There But For Fortune and When I'm Gone, two of my other favorites. But I love them all.

9. Outside Of A Small Circle Of Friends
The song was my introduction to him. We used the song in an exercise for a social criticism and political satire class back in the sixties.

12. Most everything he did had merit. Lots of it was really great.
He certainly was the voice of the anti-war contingent of the '60s.
