Anyone have a political science degree?
I'm going back to school. As of now, this is my choice of majors. If you have one, what have you been able to do with it?

Undergrad degree, specifically.

Any help would be appreciated.

2. You can do a lot with it
Don't listen to Business school types and hard science majors who will try to convince you that a Liberal Arts education is a one way ticket to manager of McDonalds.

My friends who majored in political science all found lucrative jobs in the legal profession (before going to law school), banking, social services and government sectors. Employers tend to view Liberal Arts majors as good communicators and as good writers, skills which are very much needed.

4. I have a BA in poilitical science
It never helped me in the job market, but neither did my MS in journalism. Unfortunately, I used to be extremely shy so I never got to know my professors and never had a good job interview. If I hadn't been shy back then, maybe I'd be one of them pundits now. :-)

5. I have one (BS w/ minor in Enviro Science)
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 11:02 PM by jburton
I've worked for non-profit orgs and campaigns.

It seems like the extra-curricular stuff in college, like writing for student publications and leadership in political groups "got" me jobs, and the Poli Sci degree was the icing on the cake.

In other words, make plenty of connections!

And by the way, a friend of mine got an MBA the same time I got my BS, and we currently make the same salary, if that's a concern of yours.

6. I got my BA in PoliSci before going to law school...
today, I'd do it differently: I'd take many more PS classes, and become fluent in at least one other language aside from English and forego law school altogether, I think.

Anyway, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I strongly recommend no matter what you decide to get your degree in that you make sure you're at least bilingual (if you're not already)... seems to make a big difference in hiring and job options.

7. It's an excellent degree
It's my BA, with a History minor and a Master's in Public Admin. The combination has been very useful in giving me enough of a grounding in political theory and practice tbe able to make some sense of the political messes that I've lived through over the last 30 years of adult life. It combines a Liberal Arts education, with a more practical application.

Go for it!
