Yeah Baby....I' m dual booting with Linux

And I really like it. Give me about six months and I'll cut my Microsoft cord for good.

1. Which distro?
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 09:59 PM by HypnoToad
SuSE 9 and Mandrake 9.2 are the best. Go for the Professional or PowerPack versions as they include all the apps you'd ever want! Mandrake includes more programs and is more user-friendly, but SuSE is reputed to be more stable and now has self-repair capability.

Linux is best used, IMHO, with Nvidia-based video cards too.

Not to forget WineX, www.transgaming.com - you can play many windows games directly in Linux. Quite nice, that.

3. I really like Suse 9 Pro
Been playing with it for a while, and it's VERY stable. For the first time ever, I have a version of Linux that will remember all my open programs when I reboot, unlike a certain other distro *cough Red Hat cough*. And I haven't been able to make it seriously crash yet! AND it can mount an NTFS drive!

Although the video drivers are getting better, I think there's still a whole lot of work to be done. A pity I'm not a programmer!

4. Linux is an enigma
I downloaded Mandrake 9.2 and installed it on an old AMD K2 450 PC that I had. I find that Linux has a lot of neat features and is stable but man it is hard to do anything useful. For example, I am running Apache Server by default. I know it is running because I can connect from another PC or thru the internet and reach the default page. However, I have yet to figure out how to do anything with it or even find out where Apache is on Linux. I guess I am spoiled Windows user. If I had to do anything useful with a PC I would choose Windows XP for now.

Please convince me I am wrong and am just too lazy to figure out Linux.

6. It's actually not complicated, just terse
Everything is configured in human-readable scripts and configuration files. Sure it tends to be stable, but it's not hard to configure a server to be unstable when you start throwing a lot of requests at it and doing server-side processing.

5. Red Hat CEO: Use Windows
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104_2-5101690.html

Matthew Szulik, chief executive of Linux vendor Red Hat, said on Monday that although Linux is capable of exceeding expectations for corporate users, home users should stick with Windows: "I would say that for the consumer market place, Windows probably continues to be the right product line," he said. "I would argue that from the device-driver standpoint and perhaps some of the other traditional functionality, for that classic consumer purchaser, it is my view that (Linux) technology needs to mature a little bit more."

Albert Einstein once said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Desktop Linux is insane. It's not working, nor will it ever work if the Linux community stays insane. Stop being so elitist, stop telling people to RTFM when they don't know how to do this or that. But most of all, stop thinking your way is better than that guy's way, and instead collaborate and create ONE product to fight the Microsoft behemoth. You've already shown that on the server side Linux is clearly superior than Windows, but damn, how many window managers does the world need? Until then, you're a bunch of chickens running around with your heads cut off, talented and gifted yes, but with no single driving force.
