I understand treadwell's (I know I didn't spell it right) desire to help the bears. I think he was so delusional that he thought they KNEW he was there to help. It really is a study in mental illness more than a nature film.
...since I didn't actually know the guy and my only exposure to him was the film, however the impression I got was that Treadwell had deep-seated difficulties with his sexual orientation and his inability to deal with it in turn led to more emotional and psychological problems.
they don't make a big deal out of it but it's mentioned in the film that he had to get away from his addictions, he replaced his drug problem w. an obsession w. the bears which also kept him away from the drugs
...those both seem to me to be related to what I was talking about. Granted Joe had a LOT of problems upstairs but I think the problems dealing with his sexual orientation might have started the cradle to rockin' in his cranium many years earlier.
