"Snakes" Deplanes Critics
By Joal Ryan
Wed Jul 19, 5:43 PM ET

Once you have snakes on a plane, do you really need movie reviews, too?

New Line Cinema has answered that very question with a decisive no. The studio announced this week it would not host advance screenings of its geek-championed horror flick, the one, the only, the actually titled Snakes on a Plane.

Conventional wisdom says such a move--hiding a film from Roger Ebert's judgmental thumb--is a red flag, signaling the arrival of an all-new Glitter. But conventional wisdom has very little do with Snakes on a Plane, opening Aug. 18, with some late-night screenings on Aug. 17.

Not showing the movie to critics is "another badge of honor" for star Samuel L. Jackson and crew, says David Waldon, author of an upcoming book on the birth of the buzz, Snakes on a Plane: The Guide to the Internet Ssssssensation (Thunder's Mouth Press). Agrees Nick Nunziata of the genre fan site CHUD.com: "It adds to the fun of it."

Business-wise, Gitesh Pandya of the number-crunching movie site BoxOfficeGuru.com thinks New Line's decision will actually boost Snakes' bottom line. "These kind of movies are marketing-driven, not critic-driven," Pandya said. "So the only thing the critics could do is hurt it. And even if the reviews are good, they wouldn't mean much."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So I'm guessing the film is really bad. But I can't WAIT!!! One month until the opening!!

2. I think it's a sign that this movie will be a cult classic
Come on, how good was Roadhouse or Showgirls?

I'm seeing the movie, who cares if it doesn't get nominated for an Oscar

21. And Clash of the Titans
We were watching it like a train wreck the other day. How the hell did they get Olivier and Dame Maggie in that movie??? It would have been GOOD if it had been played camp... but played straight? It's the best of the bad!

It's actually on mute right now (with captions) because I'm streaming majority report.

3. and you're surprised
This is one of those "so bad it's good" type of things all along, hasn't it been? At least, that is why it's taken off.

4. As a budding screenwriter, this movie is killing me!!!!!
I spend my time writing historical dramas about the Bolshevik Revolution and such and of course I don't make a damn dime. Some idiot writes about snakes on a plane and will surely become a millionaire.

I need to lower my standards. How about Rats on a Raft? Killer Crickets on a Princess Cruise? Maggots on the Mayflower?

5. This film will be a piece of trash.
I'm irritated that so much has been made of this movie's title. If you are one of the apparent throngs that are going to see this, then you are part of what's wrong with the movies these days.

Other tell-tale signs that this is a piece of crap:

1. It's opening in mid-August, historically a dumping ground for crappy movies that the studios want to make a buck on before word of mouth spreads;

2. When the internet phenomena happened, they added extra scenes of gratuitous gore. That's never a good sign. If the scenes added to the plot, they would have been in the movie from the beginning. It's obvious that they were added to get teens "talking" about the movie.

So go see this garbage if you must. Just remember that if you do, you lose all rights to complain about how Hollywood "isn't making any good movies anymore."

6. My brain sometimes hurts from seeing too many intellectual movies
What's wrong with feeding it a bit of brain candy from time to time.

I know this movie sucks, I knew it sucked back when they first came out with the concept. And I know I'm a victim of the internet buzz about the movie.

And I personally don't care - I want to see a gory movie with Samuel L. Jackson screaming 'SNAKES ON PLANE' 'SNAKES ON PLANE' 'SNAKES ON PLANE'.

11. Alien v. Predator
I watched that one the day it came out. In fact I made plans to see it the second I heard they were making such a movie.

It is stupid, it is summer and you get to sit in air conditioning.

7. If the snake(s) are cunning and have character.... it might be good. I
suspect it will suck though. I wonder who the director is.

27. According to IMDB,
David R. Ellis is the director. He's mainly been a stunt man. The only movie I've ever heard of that he directed was Final Destination 2.

Now THAT is a telling sign, no one associated with it wants to have anything to do with it.

23. It's the kind of movie critics never like
Critics generally like highbrow movies. How fucking highbrow can something called "Snakes on a Plane" be?

I'm predicting $90 million US gross even if it does suck. $120 million US gross if it's any good whatsoever.

The only problem is, from now on every film they put Samuel L. Jackson in, he'll have to say "I want these motherfucking snakes off the motherfucking plane!" It'll be the "I'll be back" of the 21st Century!
