Also, you have emerged on the Lounge in the middle of the Soccer Wars. Do you brave the onsalught or turn tale and flee?

I will hold out good wishes you will make it to the islands someday... :)

Yes, I can tell there's a bit of soccer drama going on, but what is the lounge without DRAMA?! :D Personally, I'm not a big sports fan of any sort, so no biggie to me...

Hope you're enjoying your summer so far. When do you start up with school again? My kids start on 8/31, which kind of sucks since we're going camping over Labor Day weekend. Oh well...

50. Chicago is fun. I've got a lot of family in that area. Where are you now?
You're lucky it starts after Labor Day. The schools 'round here made the switch a few years back to the week BEFORE Labor Day, much to everyone's chagrin. We have an annual camping trip every Labor Day w/e with a bunch of other families and it always gets a bit problematic with the timing. Blah, blah, blah...

56. Yeah, we've seen a lot of movies, too. It's our thang.
So far:
"Click": cute and touching, for an Adam Sandler flick. I'm definitely NOT a fan.
"Superman Returns": fair, good special effects, though.
"Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Man's Chest": Great movie! We just saw it last night and it's got all the features of a fun, summer blockbuster.

Hang in there, in hot New Mexico. I've always wanted to check that state out. Esp. around the Taos area...sacred ground...

41. Work, I was assigned to 3 polar icebreakers. However, I made it down
there 7 times (plus 5 to the Arctic), and loved it more each time. Conversely, when we used to make patrols in the Caribbean, every one else loved it and I felt like I was being tortured heheh (luckily, being in communications, I could always escape to the air conditioned Radio Central). I don't particularly care for hot climates.

and it's the first thing I have to acquire at the new house on Wednesday. I'll do it when I go register to vote, get a new Driver's License and get the new tags for the vehicle

I'll have a 1/2 a day's errands just doing all that hehehe

guess those boxes will sit a while but I'm hoping if I buy the washer/dryer Wednesday I should be able to get it delivered by Monday

Santa Cruz huh? geez from the lovely to the lap of luxury. Nice vacation :yourock:

my old bosses had a house on the beach down in Santa Cruz and they loaned it to DH and I for a week as a wedding present. We had a ball over there. Lucky you to live there!

22. Thanks, Peggy! Yeah, I wish it could've been longer, but I'm grateful
for what we had. Two weeks in a tropical paradise is such a gift. We had such an outstanding vacation and made many sweet happy family memories. It was the kids' very first trip to Maui and they snorkeled for the very first time, too. Hopefully, it's only the first of many in their lifetimes.

For now, though, we're re-adjusting to CA time, which is proving really hard. Yup, it's back to Reality, whatever THAT is! :D

Nice to see you!

Yeah, it was great family vacation. One of the best ever. It's really great now that the kids are older and can be responsible for their own luggage. :D The kids snorkeled for the very first time and took to it like little dolphins. We swam with incredible fish, saw sea turtles, Spinner dolphins that leap and spin when they jump out of the water, native only to Maui, and we even did tandem-parasailing at 800ft above the water, which I'd never done before. Woohoo, what a thrill...:woohoo: Yes, all in all, a wonderful time was had by all.

Now I'm in re-entry shock, truthfully...plus, I'm in the midst of 12 loads of laundry. Fun, fun, fun...:eyes:

34. Yeah, I was thinking about how east coasters deal with that.
For some reason the jet lag on this end of the trip seems much harder to adjust to than when we arrived on Maui. That was part of the reason why we decided to come back on Friday, so that we'd have the weekend to get re-adjusted, but it's obviously gonna take more time. My hubby and I woke up around 9 and my kids were up between 11am and noon!! Good thing it's still summer but my hubby is back to the salt mines in the Silicon Valley tomorrow....Ugh.

Yeah, it definitely makes the re-entry more difficult...that, plus the Reality of 12 loads of laundry. Great.

All in all, though, I can't complain. We had a great time, and coming back to beautiful Santa Cruz county ain't too shabby. People come HERE for vacation, afterall...:)

46. Wow, that's great! Congrats and many blessings to you.
You may, or may not, remember that I grew up in Ojai, right over the hill from SB. I left Ojai back in '82 to go to school up at UC Santa Cruz and just never left. Met my man, had some kids, the rest is history. SB was a bit too close to home when I was a young and wild teenager. I wanted to get the hell outa Dodge, but I must say, coming back down through SB to visit in Ojai the thing that strikes me the most is how much the traffic has increased over the past 25 yrs. I know it's a no-brainer that would happen, but seriously, the last time I came down through there around late Feb, it took me about an hour of bumper to bumper traffic to get through. It NEVER used to be that way.

Anyway, I'm sure if you time your commuting appropriately it's all manageable. You can't beat the climate and natural beauty of the place. There's a lot going on, too. It helps that it's a college town cuz it keeps the vibe high and stimulating....

Good on ya, keep on havin' fun! :hi:

49. People here complain about the traffic but other than on weekends
I don't have a problem with it.

But you're right, the fact that it's a college town (but also has other thriving economic sectors) keeps the town alive.

53. Yeah, Santa Cruz is the same way, with the college vibe and traffic woes.
They've been talking about widening Hwy 1 forEVER and they've finally started the project, which is gonna take about 4 yrs. So, on top of all the rest of the regular traffic and tourist woes, we've got the major construction scene to look forward to til 2010. Oh well, good things are worth waiting for, so they say...:eyes:

In the meantime, I amuse myself during the summer months making fun of the clueless summer tourists who inevitably get lost and tie up the streets. heheheh. You'll get that way soon, I'm sure, in Santa Barbara, too.

 Good to see you! :hi: Yeah, the kids had a great and memorable first visit to Maui. It was one of our best vacations, ever. It's soooo nice to travel with them, now that they're older and can handle their OWN luggage. Gone are the days of hauling car seats and having to micro-manage everything.....thank goddess!!

Yup, we had a blast of a trip. It was the kids' first visit to Maui. They snorkeled for the first time and took to it like little fish. We made great memories and now I'm dealing with the crushing reality of tons of laundry and these cold CA temps. Boo hoo! :D Seriously, the temp never dropped below 75 degrees the whole two weeks we were there. It was perfect. I'm also gonna really miss swimming in the warm ocean waters.

All in all, I can't complain, though. I feel very grateful we made it and hell, Santa Cruz ain't too bad of a place to come home to.

Good to see you, girlfriend! Big aloha hug to you... Hope all's well on your end. :hi:

78. Hi Aristus!!
Thanks for the compliment and I'm glad you liked the pix. Yeah, it's funny, the day before we left, that's all I was saying to people: "Here today, gone to Maui".

My hubby and I actually had our honeymoon over there 13+ yrs ago, so it's always been a very special place for us. While we were on our honeymoon, we bought a couple of matching tshirts that had a couple of fish kissing each other, with the words "Just Mauied" on them. Corny, but cute. We wore them proudly, heheheh. :D

Good to see you, friend! Big aloha hug to you... Hope you're having a good summer so far. BTW, I tried to watch you on Jeopardy when you were on last month, I'd marked my calender and everything, but for some bizarre reason, I couldn't find it ANYwhere on my TV and yes, we have cable. I was pretty bummed to have missed you. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth ensued...Seriously, I hope you kicked some major Jeopardy ass and came home with big bucks. Good on ya.

That was very nice of you to say. Big  right back to you.

All the love, support and approbation I got from my fellow DU-ers was worth more than winning and striking it rich. Money is soon spent, but the warmth and fellowship of good friends lasts forever. :-)

I'm sure there is at least one DU-er out there who can supply you with a copied tape or DVD of the show. (Not me, the technology involved is beyond my poor powers.) And I heard a rumor that it may show up on youtube.com sometime soon.

Take care, Shine! :hi:

Nope, we were more into the hang out at the beach or pool scene. We snorkeled with fish and turtles, saw dolphins and eels, parasailed, hiked, slept, read and ATE really well.

82. that sounds like fun and looks fun
My parents have been to Alaska twice. They talk about going to Hawaii to complete their tour of all 50 states. Probably would be really cool for my dad the geology major. I still say they oughta goto Europe first. For one thing it is cheaper. (Probably not from California, you being about 2000 miles closer to Hawaii and the same distance further from Europe.) For another I am not even sure Hawaii should be a state. I think I read in the last week that it was the anniversary of the US annexation of the Sandwich Islands in 1896. Did they celebrate it there?

Very good to see you, especially in pictures. I hope to have some puppy pictures to post next week.

90. Hi again. Your parents should definitely check out HA. It's worth it.
Esp. if your dad is into the geology scene. It's cool. For my part, I'm VERY glad HA is a state. :D No, they didn't make a big deal about the US annexation anniversary while we were there. It was mostly 4th of July stuff. We saw a fun fireworks show they shot off a barge from the water, in Lahaina.

Looking forward to seeing your puppy pix. I'm sure they'll be adorable.

Aloha to you!! :hi:
