Although the final score is 1-1, there can't be draws in the quarterfinal round, so Germany advances since they beat Argentina on penalty kicks 4-2.

The 4:2 PSO refers to the Penalty Shoot-Out.

Since the matches can't end in draws once they get to the Round of 16 (we're in the Round of 8 - Quarterfinals now), the teams play two additional 15 minute periods of play. There's no "golden goal," as in, "sudden death." Even if a team goes ahead in the first 15 minute period, the second 15 minute period is still played.

If the teams remain tied, they go to a Penalty Shoot-Out tiebreaker. Each team gets 5 kicks, taking turns. If the match still remains tied, the goalkeepers take an additional kick. If it still remains tied, I think it goes to a sudden-death shoot-out.

It sounds complicated, but it's damned exciting!
