Radio Lady Previews: "Pirates of the Caribbean--Dead Man's Chest"
Edited on Fri Jun-30-06 12:37 AM by Radio_Lady
Will you be seeing this film when it opens on Friday, July 7, 2006?

Here's the official web site:

Startling pictures of Johnny Depp's unique make-up -- "The eyes have it!"

Amazing artist's rendering of Bill Nighy as Davy Jones, a human (slash) sea creature!

5. Late Thursday night 07/06, because I do my show on Fridays.
I've got to get it ready for that. That's the usual procedure.

Don't recall the date of opening for the M. Night Shamalayan picture. I've seen the trailer but I got burned so badly at "The Village" that I may never forgive him! (Naw, just kidding...)

7. I can understnad the Village...
I figured it out, within the first five minutes of the movie...I just had to think of something outragoues...and I was like "I bet this movie is set in modern times! And they are living like this on their own free will" and I was right..(for a change, :) )

so, a week from tomorrow...I will hear from you then. I don't plan on seeing it, but my brothers/sister's might drag me to it....:)

Some businesses are taking off Monday 7/3 and Tuesday, 7/4, as a two-day affair.

Are you working through that timeframe? Or is there something I don't know?

We are "Golden Hours," a 24/7 audio service of Oregon Public Broadcasting. My program is streamed on the internet on Mondays at 1 PM Pacific Time.(Please adjust for your time zone in other parts of the country).

The audio signal is also available through a modern TV set (less than ten years old) on KOPB, Channel 10 or whatever your cable/dish company uses for a channel. However, you do have to set it up with your remote control. I'll explain if you wish.

Computer connection is easier. PM me if you need help with that connection.

Thanks for your interest.

For many of us gals, Orlando Bloom is easy on the eyes, too. Sigh... I wish May - December liaisons were still popular. (Wake up, Radio Lady, the guy was BORN in 1977! That would REALLY be robbing the cradle. I have SONS older than him -- born in 1958 and 1969.)

25. "I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky --
And all I ask is a tall (pirate) ship, and a star to steer her by." Can't remember who wrote this quote.

I'd say the special effects in this movie may exceed the complexity of any film I've ever seen. More later in my official review.

39. Sea Fever
by John Masefield

I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

------------------

One of my personal favorites. I have it hanging in my boat.

40. Thanks for the citation. It's something I remember from my childhood.

We had a really little boat with an outboard motor while I was growing up. We lived on a tidewater canal near Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida. I honestly remember going out on it just a few times because I became motion sick at the drop of a hat (still do, but control it with drugs).

My father tied that little boat up in the backyard canal. He fashioned some old tires along the sea wall to keep the boat from hitting the wall.

One day the tide went out, and the boat got caught under one of the tires. The boat swamped and sank. I remember the guys lifting it out with a crane and taking it away.

'Twas a sad, sad day... in me life," quoth the sailor.

Oh, I'm not really a sailor. But I did play one on TV.

From my first job, in 1957, as "First Mate" Ellen with "Skipper" Chuck, on the "Popeye Playhouse" WTVJ, Miami, Florida

26. I'm sure that will help, but the story is pretty simple. Jack Sparrow
needs to pay his debt to Davy Jones and his crew. We spend the next 2 1/2 hours on that wild ride -- It really went quickly.

However, my husband, who usually likes action movies -- fell asleep. I hate it when he does that, but at least he didn't snore in the preview.

Pirates sequel seeks box office treasure
05 July 2006

LOS ANGELES: Three years ago, the $654 million smash hit movie Pirates of Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl handed its Hollywood makers a devil of a dilemma: How the heck to top it?

To meet the challenge, director Gore Verbinski and writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio fought fire with fire. For sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, they fought their devil of a dilemma with the devil of the sea – Davy Jones.

Action-adventure film Dead Man's Chest, starring Johnny Depp as swishy pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, sails into movie theatres as the most widely anticipated movie of Hollywood's lucrative summer season.

On its face, that should be good news for the movie backed by The Walt Disney Co, but any Hollywood executive worth his sea salt knows that high expectations can lead to huge disappointment if movies fail to meet expectations.

Verbinski, Depp and the others have their work cut out for them. "We always said with the first movie, our chief weapons were low expectations and the element of surprise," Elliott told reporters. "In this, we don't have the low expectations."

Indeed, audience hopes are high. At Movietickets.com, for instance, advance ticket sales for Dead Man's Chest were nearly 20 times greater than those for the first film.

44. The first one was awful. FX eye candy for dumb little kids, Lady/gay guy
candy with talented Depp and untalented Bloom (the latter of whom unfortunately is the LEAD).

Absolutely nothing of value for a straight man with good taste in movies who isn't deeply confused and enjoys an "Orlando Bloom vehicle".

It isn't funny, scary, compelling, clever, and it takes 2 and a half hours to accomplish jack $hit.

Not every movie sets out to searingly portray the weighty issues facing the world today. Quite a few of us enjoyed it.

It's OK that you didn't care for the film; tastes vary. But is your heterosexuality so fragile?
