1. We welcome you to Texas, LibfromWV!
Let's see, Irving is up around Dallas, which is definitely Bush country. Here's TX Dem website...

6. You'll hear the following phrase many times...
"y'all aren't from around here, are ye?" Get used to it and you'll be OK.:hippie:

3. It may be shrub country,
but there are an awful lot of great people from Texas who post on DU. To my mind, that means that there are sure to be some fine people in Irving. I wish you luck!

4. Well....could be worse.....
Dallas/Irving has a lot to offer. Sports, arts, great galleries and museums. Great lakes for fishing. The draw backs: loud mouthed, big hair, too much make-up wearing bitches. And traffic. Maybe post in the TX forum-get some more input. I personally live in Austin and grew up in Houston, so I don't feel completely comfortable giving advice. Good Luck!
Texas really is a terrific state to live in.

8. I've lived here..
.. over 30 years. Dallas has its plusses and minuses but there are worse places to live.

If you had specific questions I would try to answer them, and in any event we could always use another liberal down here :)

13. Irving..
.. is the 'burbs :) Although it is a "close in" burb.

Dallas is like a lot of Texas, there is a lot of variation. There are parts of Irving you would definitely not want to live in, and parts that perhaps you would.

The main thing is if your job turns out well. If it does, I'll bet you can find somewhere in Dallas that you like!

10. no its not...
I'm from Houston, and visit the Texas forum here on DU daily. We have many people posting the exact same question: I'm about to move to ------- (put your city here), Texas, and am wondering what I am getting into. There's a lot of people that post there regularly, including many Dallas DUers who will be more than happy to fill you in-- Be bold and post over there- you'll love the responses!! :hi:

ps. I used to live in Dallas many years ago, as did Mr. LD. We both loved it. Its got a lot of art, cultural activities, shopping, schools, and nice areas to live. The traffic can be a headache at times, but a lot of other cities are the same. If you got a great offer, I'm sure you're going to enjoy all that the Dallas area has to offer. Plus, we'll love adding a bit more blue to the state!

9. I work in Irving as a school administrator.
Certain parts, northern areas, are very repuke, but others toward the southern end of Irving are democratic. It's crowded and congested, but it has its appeal. I don't live there. I live much more to the south of the Dallas area and drive in. Good luck with the new job.
