The Best Beer
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 09:51 PM by gkdmaths
Now, I've sampled the mainstream diluted hopwater beers (bud, miller, schmidts, etc) and theyre great to swig fishing or something.

Now, when I'm enjoying a BEER, it has these qualities:

1. Dark
2. Thick
3. Syrupy
4. Earthy
5. The right overtones: mine is chocolate, licorice and sometimes oak on the nose.
Served cool, but not cold. wait to drink until the condensation begins to run down the sides of the bottle.
Drink while eating mild raw garlic cloves - it offers a nice contrast to the beer.
At $9.00/sixpack, I'd pay double for this beer (and have in remote places)

This is my favorite:

Deschutes Brewery Black Butte Porter.

Whats your favorite beer(wine too)?

1. I haven't really tried a lot of different beers...
But these days I'm really liking Blue Moon Belgian White. I like that it's a little tangy and mildly sweet. :)

2. Blue Moon is good and during the autumn they make a pumpkin version.
It sounds weird, but it's awesome.

13. It can be really hard to find. I can only find it at the "wine stores."
And if you get really daring, try some smoked beer. It's actually quite good, but you can't drink much and you'll feel a craving for crackers while drinking it. I've only been able to find it at one tiny hole-in-the-wall bar (that sells over 100 beers, even though it can only hold about 25 customers) and Whole Foods...tucked way far into the corner of the beer fridge.

26. Try a Black and Blue
You have to find a bar that has Blue Moon and Guiness on tap, tho'. Basically it's a Black and Tan but with Blue Moon instead of lager. SO GOOD. It sounds strange but I've turned many people on to it. :)

Anything hop-py with bite. The best brew I've had in recent memory is Bell's Two Hearted Ale. The hops made it smell sweet, like cotton candy. It was delicious.

edit- here's a link to Bell's Brewery.

12. I used to really enjoy
the IPA, but at some point, My palatte decided that IPAs lacked the body of nut browns and strong, full-bodied porters.

a worthy apponent, though.

15. AHH IPA's
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 10:51 PM by smtpgirl
I live in MD, cost of the beer, MD price

Loose Cannon - Clipper City Brewing, Baltimore
http://www.clippercitybeer.com
$7.45

60 Minute IPA - Dogfish Head Brewing, Milton, DE
http://www.dogfish.com
$6.95

Tuppers' Hop Pocket Ale - Old Dominion Brewing, Ashburn, VA
http://www.olddominion.com
$6.50

Local Beers, my favorite today, Loose Cannon, I love beers from here, hoppy, spicy, down right drinkable, this beer is for real beer drinkers, none of that sweet malty belgian Blue Moon stuff

30. My favorite IPAs: Anderson Valley Hop Ottin and Dark Horse Crooked Tree
Then there's Dogfish's 90 Minute IPA but it's a bit too high in alcohol for normal consumption. Bell's Two-Hearted is a good choice if I can't find those and since it's a MI brewery, almost all the grocery stores around here carry it. Not too bad. :9

7. It depends with me...
If I'm at a picnic or something I will more than likely choose something in the Sam Adams family...their Summer Ale is great. I also enjoy a good Heineken and Guinness if I'm drinking beer for beer's sake.

My favorite cheap stuff is Yuengling 5 bucks for a 6 pack

18. I'll second Sam Adams Summer Ale.
Really nice in hot weather. Very light but still full of flavor.

I used to avoid Sam Adams because I could not stand his wimpy radio commercials, but I've gotten over that.

I bought a mixed case at Costco recently and I'm enjoying it. The Cherry Wheat is very nice also.

8. You would LOVE "Death and Taxes"
...It's a black lager made by Moonlight Brewing Company in the SF Bay Area.

Sadly, only available at bars there. No bottles. No export. I make it a point to drink it when I'm there, every couple of years.

It's still magic. :)

11. If ever a beer was worth a road trip, this would be it
I raved about it for years, finally got over there with my girlfriend, who was perpetually annoyed by "Yeah, this is good, but there's this one beer in SF..." :D

Anyhow, hit a little dive bar and made her have one.

Her eyes widened.

"Crap. This is really good!"

16. I'm kind of partial to Belgian quadrupels and British old ales.
Westvleteren 12 (Belgian trappist ale) and Thomas Hardy's Ale are the two best I've had.

Thomas Hardy's is the only one you're likely to find in the States, and it's a bit on the pricey side...$20+ for four 8.5 ounce bottles. It's 'bottle-conditioned', which means there's live yeast in the bottle that continues working, and the taste improves if it's cellared. It's thick, syrupy, and complex, sort of reminiscent in a way of a good port or sherry. It's a beer that should be savoured near room-temperature and drunk from a snifter so that you can get the full impact of combination of aroma and flavour. Definitely worth trying if you can find any.

The Westvleteren is also bottle-conditioned, and has a similar complexity and richness (and they both have a high alcohol content, 10-12%).

22. They didn't have a name for it
But in 76" I was at a little monastery near OBERAMMERGAU, Austria and they had the best beer in the world, I would hope so they said that they have been brewing that there for over 1200 years.

Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 01:50 AM by jpgray
Keep in mind, it has all the flavors you want but might kick your ass on first sampling. Try a Bell's Expedition Stout. It pours like used motor oil, but its taste is as good as mine, or something. It's an imperial stout, but it's 11.5% abv is well hidden with awesome flavor. Be careful not to get a skunked bottle (overexposed and oxidized by light).

Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 12:19 PM by Juniperx
I like to bargain shop at Trader Joe's, BevMo, etc. My current favorites are Mission Street Pale Ale and Firestone Double Barrel Ale. A trip to the Firestone brew pub is well worth the trip! And then you have Solvang just down the road, with its fine array of beer gardens.

http://www.firestonewalker.com/

The San Diego Real Ale Festival is a yearly event that never disappoints. I discovered Russian River's Pliny the Elder there a year or two ago...

http://www.russianriverbrewing.com/pages/awards.html

Moylan's Moylander Double IPA is another favorite.

http://www.moylans.com/pages/brewery/awards.htm

I love a good oatmeal stout too, but I've yet to find one in a bottle that I like. I'll always try one on cask at any pub though! Guinness on cask is heaven... mmmmmmm...
