5. I'm a real demographic freak.

Grew up in a rural area, but my folks were solidly middle class -- dad drove downtown every weekday to do his union typesetter's job for a city newspaper.

They were willing to pay for me to go to college (though my dad's job had gone down the crapper my junior year of high school, and when I dropped out after my second year, he still wasn't working steadily again), but I got so disenchanted with what I saw happening to what was going to be my profession since I was in about the fifth grade -- journalism -- I dropped out and got married to the first guy who'd asked me. I got lucky -- it wasn't a bad match, and lasted ten years, but I still haven't found the motivation to go back yet.

20. The lack of a college degree does not mean one is not

well educated. In too many cases the presence of a college degree means that one had parents who could afford to pay tuition for four or more years, thus enabling one to put off becoming an adult. There are a lot of colleges who will not flunk a student who is not dependent upon any financial aid.

I dropped out of college after trying to pay for it myself for two years. I got tired of going hungry, not knowing how I was going to pay my rent and other bills and not being able to afford the books.

Patterns of thoughtfulness and reflection can occur in anyone regardless of the level of formal education.

Also, so often an undergraduate degree is a measure more of tenacity than education. It's best to make judgements based on individuals; the credential alone isn't meaningful unless the person makes it so.

I have a bachelor's in philosophy, and then the other bachelor's along with the master's and PhD are all in physics. I've been in school since 1993 and I'm all set to go and earn sh*t in a postdoctoral research position studying brain cancer starting in Feb once I do my thesis defense next month. Yup, my new salary will be less than what I could have done right out of undergrad in the dotcom boom in 1998. <sigh> Was it worth it? Dunno, right now I'm too burnt out to be able to think about that. The postdoc position should lead to a good career down the road.

I do understand your frustration about the money thing, though. One of my best friends got a PhD in history and has been teaching at a small, private women's college for about four years now. He really loves it. Oddly, his first bachelor's was in mathematics, but he always had a love of European (particularly French) history.

but I've been taking college classes on and off since I graduated high school more than 25 years ago and have around 200 semester hours accumulated.

At various times I was intending to get a degree and then would move to another part of the country or have some other change in my life that I let get in the way.

Almost everyone who meets me assumes very quickly that I have a degree, and lately people have thought I'm a college professor. In recent years, when taking classes at my local junior college, I bake chocolate chip cookies on test days. It helps keep my GPA at a 4.0.
