Any favorite classic American Highway or biway you enjoy? Tell us your "other" if you have one.

1. Highway 1
Anybody who says otherwise hasn't wound through cliffs overlooking the Pacific as the setting sun sets the sky on fire and the water lights up to match. I could drive that road every day of my life and it would never get old.

16. America sang a song "Ventura Highway"...must mean HWY101
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 12:57 AM by scoey1953
This near Malibu..I love that area.

click here to hear the song:
http://wworks.com/~dperson/America%20-%20Ventura%20Highway.mp3

Chewing on a piece of grass
Walking down the road
Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, joe?
Some people say this town dont look good in snow
You dont care, I know

Ventura highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
Youre gonna go I know

cause the free wind is blowin through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...

Wishin on a falling star
Waitin for the early train
Sorry boy, but Ive been hit by purple rain
Aw, come on, joe, you can always
Change your name
Thanks a lot, son, just the same

Ventura highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
Youre gonna go I know

cause the free wind is blowin through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...

47. Extremely boring...dead straight between Memphis and Clarksdale.
IIRC it only varies off of the centreline by four inches for nearly eighty miles. (Last time I drove it, I was taking a road trip in a borrowed Corvette, and it was all I could do not to push it up to 180 mph....few other roads I've driven beg for a top-speed run the way that one does.)

Susanville,Ca. in the north to south of Lone Pine,Ca.The views are quite stunning.

Hwy. 550, or the "Million Dollar Highway",from Durango,Co. to Ouray,Co.,also deserves a mention.

12. Sounds beautiful
I remember a very harrowing trip with my parents when I was a kid on Needles Drive in the Black Hills of South Dakota. My dad was driving (it was a two lane road with no shoulders and severe dropoffs), and he was spending more time with his eyes on the scenery than on the road. I am surprised we did not go tumbling down in the Needles.

It's most beautiful in the spring and summer when the flowers are blooming...:D

And I can totally identify with your experience with your Dad. My grandmother would be too busy talking and pull over to show me the view and would just get too damn close to the edge! I'm afraid that I didn't much appreciate the spectacular scenery, since I was trying not to wet my pants, LOL! I'm afraid of heights and my nightmares are comprised of moments like these...:scared:

My grandmother lived in Black Mountain, and loved to visit the Folk Arts Center that located on the Parkway. I've driven it myself, though not far. I remember getting lost...

But you're right, it's spectacular country. I've driven through Virginia, on my way to NC, and was always particularly impressed.:-)

27. hey, that's cool ... i used to live in billings, but
mostly grew up in northern wyoming (sheridan, just south of the MT border), so "the park" for us was Yellowstone :) (from which descends my other favorite Montana highway--Beartooth Pass)

It's been years since I've been back in that part of the world, but still very dear to my heart :)

40. I've come to hate "other" on most of my polls.
People choose other and make some obscure choice that doesn't fit the definition of the poll. My "Favorite Labor Film" had an other option. People chose other and listed a bunch of films that had almost nothing to do with unions. Annoying.

I didn't have an other for this because I knew many people would pick their favorite little scenic drive that isn't really a classic highway, and then "other" would be the most popular choice.

56. I can see that logic
makes sense to me, and I noticed that on the labor movie thread as well

Of course, with respect to the Going to the Sun Road, it probably wouldn't meet the strictest definition of highway (though strict definitions of classic american highway might be difficult to pin down from person to person), but it certainly fits the "classic American highway or biway" category outlined in the message :)

Although anyone in Detroit knows that the best highway is I-696. It is the closest thing to the Autobahn there is outside of Montana. The speed limit is 65 (they're going to raise it to 70, soon), but really, it's just a suggestion.

From the rocky shores and pine forests of Maine, south through Portland and Boston, down through Manhattan, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, and all the way south to the sandy beaches of Key West...there's no other highway in the country that has such varied scenery. And I doubt there's one that passes through so many major cities, either.
