What happened in the "I don't like to be called sir" thread to delete it?

I just tried to go back to it to see what else people posted - there was no hint earlier of a flame war or anything uncivil at all.

What the hell happened?

And note: I'm not questioning the mods' decision on this in any way, I'm simply curious what happened. Not "WHY", but what happened.

Otherwise, it causes more drama since everyone who missed it needs to find out what happened. That being said, it was a civil thread when I looked at it last and I really want to know what happened.
