Fathers Day makes me sad
I am not a parent and my grandfathers are long gone. My father died in July of 1992, and Father's Day was the last time I spoke to him. So, I just kind of get through it. A holiday for other people.

It's a difficult one for me, too - though for different reasons. The vast majority of memories of my father (who's still alive) are not pleasant. :-(

I lost my dad back in 1989, quite suddenly, and it still hurts on days like today. I think we're entitled to feel thataway now and again...

Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone.

7. Actually...
...I had to reply because it's this thread that let me know I wasn't alone in my loss. I know exactly what you're meaning when you say the world changed forever because of something so sudden.

This thank you is a two-way street.

8. Same here.
It's not a good day. Not a parent, no grandfathers, my father died in 2001. It feels pretty empty, like every other holiday.

I'm sorry it's a rough day for you, and for all of the others who have posted about losing their fathers. It's a pain some of us don't understand, but sadly will understand some day.

12. I know the feeling.
My Dad passed away in April 1997.

It still hurts, especially on Father's Day.

I also miss my stepfather who passed away in October 2002.
We became very close.

16. Not really a story but something I appreciated.
My dad was an atheist. I did a masters degree in religion. I wrote a paper comparing theistic views of creation with the astrophysical view of the origins of the universe. My dad took an interest and read my paper and some of the books I'd been reading, which were all over the place. None of the "religious" or fundie members of my family ever made the least effort to relate to me on that level, but he did.

Fathers who take intelligent daughters seriously are a wonderful thing.

28. and a liberal
I remember him saying that Nixon was a crook while I was in grade school, long before he was president! And I remember him saying that big business was going to take over our country, back in the 70s.

15. I'm sorry for the tough day.
It makes me sad, too. Not for myself, but on behalf of my son. His father physically abandoned him when he was 8 after emotionally and financially abandoning him since birth. He's contributed ZERO in financial or emotional support for the past 7 years. The boy's birthdays and every holiday go by without a gift or a card or a even a call - unless it's a call filled with empty promises and false hope.

Take this day and smile, remembering the caring, loving man that you were lucky enough to have for many years (or am I being presumptuous about the relationship?). A lot of kids are not so lucky and have to deal with the fact that their parent cares nothing about them.

20. First Father's Day without my dad
This is my first Father's Day since my dad passed away, and it doesn't feel like a holiday to me either. I never noticed that there is so much hype-- all the sales, commercials, etc. I'll be glad to through today. :(

I'm sending good vibes your way.
