Help me..I'm miserable with this computer problem
Starting yesterday, I can't use the scroll function when I come to DU. It is horrible because I'm having DU withdrawal...

The back button on the mouse doesn't work either. The scroll function
is jumpy and if there are too many posts, I can't even read it at all because it is so slow. When I use "print friendly" option, I can scroll fine, but that's just not something I really want to do.

What really got me is that I went to my online banking and I could barely use the e-bill function.

I've noticed when there are lots of "blue" lines is when it doesn't work...also it doesn't work with the keyboard either, so it doesn't appear to be the mouse.

ALSO one other piece of info..yesterday morning I discovered I had a hijacker. ( daughter doing god knows what) I ran spybot and got rid of it and changed my home page back to DU. I don't know if this is what started it or not.

ANY help would be so appreciated.

1. Try
re-installing your mouse drivers. What operating system are you using?

3. Hi
Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 04:37 PM by OKNancy
I already reinstalled the mouse software. I'm thinking it may not be the mouse because the keyboard arrows don't work right either

Edit...forgot to add..Windows98SE.

I haven't had a bit of problem with it either. I wlways shake my head when people bitch about Windows, because I rarely have crashes, etc...only when I try to get too much going at once.

THis is the first time I haven't been able to solve my own problem.

2. The problem with spybot and other ad-ware removers
is that they remove the ad-ware but to not remove the references to them as browser plug-ins.

There is a program called "hijackThis!" that allows you to manually remove those entries, but I wouldn't recommend it to a novice.

5. Okay, OKnancy...

..before you do anything drastic, clear your browser cache, then do a disk cleanup from the system tools menu. After that, run scandisk and see if Windows (if that is what you are running) wont fix the errors it finds (make sure you have the box checked in for auto fix errors).

Then do a reboot and see if the problem still persists.

You can also check out: <http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/gettingstarted>

which has alot of help for those "annoyances" that come with Windows.

Good luck.

7. Have You Recently Installed New Software?
Whenever I got funky computer problems, it was often because the software that I downloaded had a conflict with some other software.

You may want to do a system restore to an earlier date, BUT BE CAREFUL. If you do a system restore you will lose work that you've done on your computer.

10. Nope
no new software.

This is really strange. It just happened suddenly. THe only thing I could think that was slighty funky was the hijacking.

8. Run Ad-Aware and get Zone Alarm
The former does all that registry stuff mentioned above. The latter is a firewall. Both are free, available from C/Net, etc. Here are the C/Net links:

Don't know what you mean about the blue lines. Could you be more specific?

9. I already have those
I have Zone alarm and adware, although I use Spybot more now because I like it better.

Hyperlinks...when there are a lot of hyperlinks on a page, it won't scroll..

It works fine on text only pages, or for example on DU threads that aren't too big.

13. Might want to update them
Both have put out new builds lately. For Ad-Aware especially, this can make a big difference, digging out hundreds of malware cookies and registry entries that were previously ignored.

If you have ever installed any product from Real networks, you might have to go down the rabbit hole to do battle against their assorted evil stay behinds. Here's a start: http://www.mikescomputerinfo.com/TkBellExe.htm

This is even better. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and write down all the programs that are shown as open. Then compare against this list:
http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
Can't hurt.

14. Do you have another mouse you could try
just to make sure that's not the problem? Always start with the hardware, because it's usually the simplest thing to fix; if the hardware is the problem, then you've not torn your hair out fiddling with registry settings and replacing .dll's for nothing. Just try another mouse and see if it helps.

Do you see the scroll bar at all in IE, on any website? Is it a wheel mouse?

15. system restore
If 98SE has system restore, try it.
Go to programs > accessories > System tools > system restore
Choose a restore point prior to your daughter using the computer.
It has worked for me a number of times.
Good luck.
