2. I actually like interleague play

Simply because it forces the American league teams to play real baseball. Yes, I am a Twins fan, but it burns my ass that the Twins stayed in the American League, while the Brewers were sent to the National League. :grr:

That being said. The Twins have been hot at home. Hopefully, this weekend, in Pittsburgh, they can overcome their road woes!

Well, not "simply" — I also don't like it because I'm a staunch traditionalist, and interleague play goes against something baseball has stood for since its beginnings.

But I resent the suits trying to tell me "It's good for baseball" when that really means "We want more ticket revenue." I know they have ridiculously huge payrolls, but that's their own damned fault.

Also in the pursuit of the dollar, they're trying to create rivalries. I got news for 'em — you don't "create" rivalries; they have to evolve.

Baseball is trying to follow the highly successful NFL business model, and that strikes me as wrong. Baseball isn't football. It doesn't need to be.

There should only be MAYBE three a year:

1. World Series.

2. MAYBE a pre-season exhibition series between rival clubs. Nats vs. Orioles. White Sox vs. Cubs; Yankees vs. Mets. They key word here is 'exhibition'...they shouldn't count.

3. All-Star game.

Period. That's all, folks.

Seems like every year they're upping the numbers, too. Used to be just one series. Right before the break. I don't know about anyone else, but my Cubbies have three. Just finished getting murdelated by Detriot (ouch), next is Cleveland and after that, the Twins ( :hi: ).

And, yes — football players are padded and caged and shielded far beyond those in any other sport. That's not so much to prevent injury as to prevent serious injury, because in the "pit" there's a risk of getting a knee wrecked for life or a neck broken. (The latter happened to a guy from my home town, Del Rodgers, when he played for Green Bay. It ended his career only a couple of years into it.)

So I'll grant that the risk of serious injury is far greater in football — but the sport's conditioning program is also geared to lessen that risk, along with the body armor. (Ever see the weight machines those guys work on?)

But there's no way anyone can tell me that every time a guy slides into second base he's not risking a broken ankle, or a broken shoulder when he dives for a ball, or a torn hamstring on any number of plays. Hell, Harmon Killebrew ripped the shit out of a hamstring in the 1970 All-Star Game simply by stretching for a throw at first.

And that's not to mention a ball coming near a guy's head at 95 mph.

...I was simply making the point - based on KW's hypothesize that an NFL player should try to play 162 games a year - that the idea that a football player could play 162 games a year, given ALL the physical ramifications of professional football, is preposterous. I find it hard that many would argue that point.

Hell, I'm sure it taxed them when they went from 12 games in a season to 14, and then to 16. Of course, now they have more bye weeks, but still...

What bothers me so much about that is how they shoot players with painkillers to keep them playing with injuries. That's how guys really get messed up. I mean for life.

No, I wouldn't deny for a second that football is the most brutal sport, with the highest risk of serious injury.

17. Friend and I who were Footy fans

used to joke about this. We'd wonder why the NFL didn't scout for kickers, at least, in the AFL and VFL (and whatever other leagues y'got down there), and we figured if they did, it'd go something like this:

"Okay — so you want me to kick goals, and you're gonna let a mate hold the ball while I do it, and you're gonna let these nine donks try to stop the other side from blocking it, and I get to do it from straight on and I don't have to run while I'm doing it? You don't want a footballer, mate, you want a bloody nanny!"
