Tell me.....Tell us about a happy day in your life
Enough with the bring down events over in gd and lbn, give us something to smile about, a wedding, birth, some proud moment in your life when everything was great.

1. When my kids were born
(obvious answer ... but, still)

My son came out after a long and traumatic labor. We were sooooo relieved that we both made it through! They put him on my belly and I remember being surprised at how warm and slippery and solid he felt. I remember thinking: "Who is this little person?" He was looking around through swollen eyes. I felt a sense of relief, happiness and also bewilderment, like, "What? Me? I'm supposed to be a mother now?" It took me just a little while to fall completely in love with him.

My daughter's birth also came after a long labor, but it wasn't as traumatic. A French medical student had observed the birth (her first witnessing of that particular process) and I remember her look of absolute amazement as my daughter came out. I was an old pro at motherhood by that point (well, for three years) and I remember feeling joyous and not bewildered. We put on "Here Comes the Sun" and joked that the song should have been "Here Comes the Daughter." I remember sunlight streaming through the window and my mom exclaiming how absolutely beautiful our daughter was.

:hi:

3. The day I got my Master's degree
I had worked on it for four years part-time while I worked full-time. I earned every bit of that degree by myself, with hard work and determination. The school where I earned it had their first December graduation that year (they usually only had one, in May), and and when I put on my Master's robes and hood, I was so proud! :D I'm really glad I took the time and effort to get my Master's degree, because it has paid off professionally in many ways. :)

4. The day I hiked the Grand Canyon
Hiked from the South Rim to the Colorado River and back in one day. Eighteen miles, eleven hours. Everything worked. My body performed at levels I didn't think were possible. The weather and scenery were gorgeous. I met some very nice folks. A much lengthier account of the trip is available upon request.

5. Winning Soldier of the Month
I know, it sounds silly. But, it was the first time I had actually WON something on my own. I was the first Soldier in my infantry company to win a Brigade level SOM competition in years. Nobody thought I could do it. They gave me a nice trophy (which I still have). That was one of the happiest moments in my life. There have been other great days to be sure, but that one stands out.

7. The day I got offered this job
Two years earlier I'd been fired from a corporate PR job, literally for being too good at it. I was a threat to my boss and was therefore at willed (at least according to the attorneys I'd spoken with). I spent six months unemployed then worked for a year and a half selling my soul selling newspaper and then radio advertising and wondering each month whether I could pay my rent and car payment (and having my career interrupted for surgery for removal of a brain tumor).

Then I applied for this job, development director at a public radio station and beat 170 others to get it. I've been here 15 years and I LOVE it.

8. I don't think I have had my best day yet
But I have had a whole lot of amazing ones....like the first time my son smiled at me, or the first time he told me he loved me. There have been so many great days - I am incredibly blessed.

14. When my husband and I got married at City Hall in San Francisco.
Remember the time when San Francisco was conducting the gay marriages a few years back? Well, we were one of the couples who tied the knot during that time. And not a minute too soon. Right after we got married, we hopped on a plane and by the time we got back to NYC, the courts had forced the City to stop.

But, OMG, did we cry during the ceremony. I can't explain how powerful it was to be able to say the words that heterosexual couples get to say on their wedding day. And every where you looked, couple after couple was getting married. It was an amazing day.

15. There was a day in March, 2002
It was scary, but was easily the most wonderful day of my life thus far.

Some friends of mine and I removed some animals from a "farm" nearby that were being starved to death. 250 animals found new homes. The court case was a downer. The owner walked.

The next day? Not so great. Clean up was really a big task. BTW, Simple Green will remove ANYTHING from a car interior.

17. Thanks.
I really don't, though there are others that do.

A great number of animals found sanctuary because folks did the right thing, by choice. I did the only thing, as it wasn't a choice for me. They took the greater risk, the bigger leap.

18. First train ride in Europe.
I was 20 years old, bound for a summer course in Germany. I'd booked one of those flights on Icelandic where they drop you in the middle of Luxembourg, and I'd bought a Eurail pass for my big adventure.

I'll never forget riding the train from Luxembourg and into Germany and finding myself traveling through the Mosel Valley. The windows on the trains had these handles on them, and I remember clinging to the handles and letting the wind blow against my face as I got my first look at Germany. It was the middle of summer and we were in the midst of a wine-growing region, and the train raced past vineyards and villages, past campgrounds and along the river.

It was one of the best and most perfect moments of my life.

19. My son read a book to me.
I got to share that moment and my pride in my son with somebody I love. Life was sweet, with my son and I snuggled up on the sofa I was content.

20. "The pull over at that particular rest stop on I-95 day."
It was a week after my fiance proposed to me, but it was the first day I realized he didn't just want to be with me in spite of everything, but because of everything since all the bits and pieces that encompass my life made me who I am and made him who he was. Complexities and all. Not to mention the uniform. (Even if no one else understands it. Even if that stop was far too brief.)
