8 the 30s, primarily
9) that's interesting...I can think of books that made me cry, and books that made me angry, but off the top of my head I can't think of a book that made me laugh out loud...
10) allmusic.com, imdb.com
11) A few from the Harlem Renaissance: Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston

1) where do you rate on the kinsey scale? would your thoughts rate the same?

1 or a 2 - I had a same-sex experience in my teens, but it didn't do anything for me. I don't get turned on by men, but I don't get turned off either.

2) what tv characters do you wish had gotten together or stayed together?

Buffy & Spike 4Ever! I can't believe Friends never went for Joey & Phoebe - I hated Mike & the way they sold Phoebe out.

3) do you own any hemp?

No - gave up the gear a few years ago.

4) what is your favorite lesser-known joni mitchell song?

Couldn't tell you titles, but I like Clouds a lot.

5) what weird things do you do with ice cream?

Ignore it.

6) do you think dave eggers "a heartbreaking work of staggering genius" was a heartbreaking work of staggering genius?

It was rather good, although the last book (whose title I forget - the one that started on the front page) was a real disappointment.

7) what obscure band would you recommend?

The Tiger Lillies http://www.tigerlillies.com/

8) what decade are your favorite movies from?

70s & 90s (& 80s if I need braindead or family fun).

9) what book actually made you laugh out loud?

Scepticism Inc by Bo Fowler. (& I've laughed a couple of times at Douglas Coupland's jPod which I'm reading now.)

10) besides du what are your favorite websites?

The WFMU blog - http://blog.wfmu.org/

11) what person of color do you wish more people knew about or talked about?

Arundhati Roy should be head of the World or something.

12) what is your dream car?

I can barely identify cars & don't drive so God knows.

13) is it often 4:20 where you live?

Less than you'd imagine.

14) what was your favorite song when you were 10 years old?

If Turtle Power was out then, that - otherwise probably Pet Shop Boys' I Want A Dog.

15) what were you like as a child? are you much different now?

The same as I am now but more inquisitive, so no.

16) what album do you listen to a lot?

Patti Smith - Horses

17) at what age did you first fall in love? did you (think you would) get married?

I don't think I have - lust doesn't really count, although it still hurts in the end.

18) if someone you care about was getting married today what would you say to them?

"Hahahahahhahahaha you old fart!"

19) free form - post whatever question you would like to ask (or anything else you would like)

Recommend some films you've seen recently:

Okay - Lars von Trier's Manderlay will wind you up and make you think in equal measure; don't take it literally and don't buy into the 'he's never been there so he can't criticize America' bollocks.

8 Women is a magnificent murder-mystery-musical by Francois Ozon with one of the greatest casts put together (Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Beart, Fanny Ardant, Virginie Ledoyen, Ludivine Sagnier, etc).

Plus 3-Iron & A Bittersweet Life proving that South Korea is the place to be.

10. okay, let's see
1) where do you rate on the kinsey scale? would your thoughts rate the same?
Whatever score corresponds to "hetero, but not uptight about it." I really don't feel like looking it up.

2) what tv characters do you wish had gotten together or stayed together?
Yogi Bear and BooBoo. They don't seem to have much in common, so they must really be in love.

3) do you own any hemp?
Hemp is great stuff.

4) what is your favorite lesser-known joni mitchell song?
What? I'm 25. Most of her catalog is older than me.

5) what weird things do you do with ice cream?
I make faces at it at the store, then I go find where they're hiding the soy stuff this week.

6) do you think dave eggers "a heartbreaking work of staggering genius" was a heartbreaking work of staggering genius?
I haven't read it. Doesn't sound like my thing.

7) what obscure band would you recommend?
I'm too out of tough to have the feintest idea what's mainstream and what's obscure, to be perfectly honest.

8) what decade are your favorite movies from?
They're spread out.

9) what book actually made you laugh out loud?
The Indispensible Calvin and Hobbes

10) besides du what are your favorite websites?
Find your own porn! :P

11) what person of color do you wish more people knew about or talked about?
Coretta Scott King. Even when she died people only talked about her in the context of her marriage and she was interesting in her own right and continued to be interesting and to evolve in her thinking throughout her life.

12) what is your dream car?
I really want a Toyota Estima Hybrid

13) is it often 4:20 where you live?
no

14) what was your favorite song when you were 10 years old?
Damened if I remember. Some godawful hair metal thing no doubt.

15) what were you like as a child? are you much different now?
I was quiet and introspective but doing my own thing and questioning authority. I'm nothing like that now. :eyes:

16) what album do you listen to a lot?
I try to mix it up and not listen to any one thing too much.

17) at what age did you first fall in love? did you (think you would) get married?
I was 24. I'd already been married. Unfortunately it's hard to see the difference between loving somebody and being in love until one has experienced the latter.

18) if someone you care about was getting married today what would you say to them?
Are you 100% sure this is what you want to do?

19) free form - post whatever question you would like to ask (or anything else you would like)

20. I found him through the Cocteau Twins...
...when they collaborated on The Moon and the Melodies. I also enjoyed his Lovely Thunder cd but The White Arcades is my absolute favorite. I haven't really gotten into his latest releases though. It may be something that has to grow on me a little later...

I hope you'll enjoy it! :hi:

10) besides du what are your favorite websites?
Wikipedia, a couple writer's sites, and a few sites I don't think we're allowed to mention.

11) what person of color do you wish more people knew about or talked about?
James Baldwin — I think plenty of people know about him, but not enough talk about him.

12) what is your dream car?
A pickup truck with a mobile doppler radar on the back.

13) is it often 4:20 where you live?
Never in the way you mean.

14) what was your favorite song when you were 10 years old?
The Promise by When in Rome :P

15) what were you like as a child? are you much different now?
Quiet, introverted, avid bookworm. I'm pretty much the same now, 'cept I know how to be outgoing when I have to be (but it's not my natural state of being).

16) what album do you listen to a lot?
Lately, Swagger by Flogging Molly. This changes on a regular basis, though.

17) at what age did you first fall in love? did you (think you would) get married?
My first puppy sort of love was at 16. Sadly, I'm not sure I've ever really been in love as an adult. There're people I've cared deeply for, but love — I just don't know. I've never been married, and I don't know if I'd ever get married or not. It's not something I feel I simply Have to do.

18) if someone you care about was getting married today what would you say to them?
Congratulations. I hope you've a happy life. All that sounds trite, doesn't it?

19) free form - post whatever question you would like to ask (or anything else you would like)
Mmm, what are you listening to right now?

Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 04:12 PM by Derailer
but I didn't do that this time.

1) Where do you rate on the Kinsey scale? Would your thoughts rate the same?

I ditched to shack up with some chick in a ratty no-tell the day they taught the Kinsey scale, sorry.

2) What TV characters do you wish had gotten together or stayed together?

Alf and that guy who looked like Joe Lieberman.

3) Do you own any hemp?

Hemp has no know practical uses, silly!

4) What is your favorite lesser-known joni mitchell song?

That one YOU'VE never heard. Out of spite.

5) What weird things do you do with ice cream?

I'm not going to answer that, but on a related note I've never seen a priest that ashen-faced before in my life.

6) Do you think dave eggers "a heartbreaking work of staggering genius" was a heartbreaking work of staggering genius?

You hate and persecute him with your sarcasm because you don't understand him!

7) What obscure band would you recommend?

Are The Traveling Wilburys obscure? Oh, wait. It doesn't matter since I DON'T recommend them.

8) What decade are your favorite movies from?

What year did He-Man come out?

9) What book actually made you laugh out loud?

13) Is it often 4:20 where you live?

Yes, and it often comes in public places which is the best.

14) What was your favorite song when you were 10 years old?

This Christmas card song for our school play. Not getting the lead role cost my parents $$$ in therapy.

15) What were you like as a child? Are you much different now?

Let's Go by Rancid. Dope Sick Girl is the soundtrack to my mid-20s.

Kristen, third grade. I never worked up the nerve to talk to her or I would've proposed obviously.

18) If someone you care about was getting married today what would you say to them?

If the pictures didn't deter him, what's to discuss?

19) Free form - post whatever question you would like to ask (or anything else you would like)

The mark of a bad interviewer is closing with "Do you have anything to add?" No, I don't have anything to add dumbass, I just spent the last half-hour answering the preening, self-indulgent, inspid, uninspired tripe you are smugly passing off as "questions"!

1. Probably a 1 or 2 out of 6. My thoughts can get outrageous.
2. TV? What's that? :silly:
3. I have some actual hemp/twine...not sure if there's a reference here I'm missing, like the 4:20 question...?
4. I think I know maybe ONE Joni Mitchell, and that's "Big Yellow Taxi," which is hardly lesser-known.
5. Eat it. Literally--I bite right into it. No licking for me! :bounce:
6. Who is Dave Eggers? :dunce:
7. I don't know any obscure bands--I doubt that I've EVER heard a single indie song. Hell, I like Steely Dan--what were you expecting for an answer? :D
8. See answer to #2. :D :D
9. LITTLE CHILDREN, by Tom Perrotta. :spray:

12. Something that WORKS would be nice...
13. It has NEVER been 4:20 where I live....don't do that shit. ;)
14. Oh, shit....Let me think...I know that when I was 4 or 5 I really dug Rod Stewart's "Maggie May," but I can't think of what I dug at 10, even though that was only a few years back.... :dunce:
15. I still AM a child! But when I was younger, I was very shy, very reclusive. I'm still rather hermit-like, but now I've got this fiery side to me, especially in writing... ;) ;)
16. Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill and Aja have been on constant play around here for the past two weeks...I also frequently dig out Miles Davis's epochal Kind of Blue, and Bob Marley and the Wailers' Legend: The Best of Bob Marley. Dig it, dude! :D
