Documentary of Steve Earle playing in DC area!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58126-2003Dec11.html

the name of the movie is "Just an American Boy"

<snip>
Steve Earle, Running Against the Wind
"Just an American Boy" captures Earle on tour as the controversy over "Jerusalem" hit....

...Steve Earle is a man of voracious appetites. In "Just an American Boy," Amos Poe's documentary about the country music star, Earle cuts a furious swath through the first leg of a year-long concert tour, savoring ideas and musical influences and political controversy as eagerly as barbecue and Philly cheese steaks."

(95 minutes, at Visions Bar Noir) is not rated. It contains strong language

I'm so there!

1. The DVD will be out Feb 10. Can't wait! >
I saw this tour in Madison, WI, late Feb this year. The stage was covered with "No War" posters and Steve was PISSED.

It was the first politically charged concert I'd been to in probably 30 years. He closed the show with a The Youngbloods "Get Together" and then a blazing version of Nick Lowe's (What's So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding.

Great, uplifting, energizing experience.

2. blazing version of PL&U, indeed
Right you are about Earle's live version of Peace Love and Understanding. He rocked out on it when I saw him last February.

I have been hoping he would put it on a CD or in this case, I hope it is on this DVD you are talking about.

4. I recall "A Train A Comin' " being written while he was IN prison
did the WP not do their fact checking, or am I drinking too many Becks Dark this early in the morning? I believe his equally fine cd "I Feel Alright" was written after his release. I recall a story on how he had use of a guitar in prison to write the songs for "A Train..."

5. I saw the tour, too
at a crappy venue in Portland, ME - where the sound system sucked. It was too loud and distorted to catch a lot of his lyrics.

Still - "What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding" was worth every moment of it. Steve was at his angry, passionate, and ultimately joyous best.

6. Most of the Train' songs were older, actually >
but you're correct -- the two new ones "Angel is the Devil" and "Mystery Train Pt. II" were written in the slammer.

Steve didn't even have a guitar during his "vacation in the ghetto" prior to jail -- he had pawned them all.

Thank God for his recovery -- he's right at the top of really important artists working right now, IMO.

7. Thanks for the affirmation
I needed that after a long night. Sounds like you might be a cheesehead if you go to shows in Madison. I saw Steve at the Orpheum a couple years back with the mega-producer/guitarist formerly of the Del Lords. The WP should get the facts right the first time, but I don't have an email of the journalist to correct her. I'd love to, as it would be a small thrill to have the WP make a correction in part to me. I do recall since you mentioned it Steve pawn off his guitars before prison time.

8. I'm in Iowa -- Madtown's just 3 hours. The guitarist you mention is >
Eric "Roscoe" Ambel. Great addition to the Dukes!
