Did any of you Veterans get "the letter" yet?
The letter informing you that your data might have been among those stolen a few weeks ago. Telling you to be careful, check stuff...etc.

1. Yeah... loved how they didn't actually state that they were doing anything
I love the VA. None of the service and all of the guilt of living with mom.

4. I was in 65 - 69 and I received one a few days ago.

They might not have a current address on you.

Congrats on slipping thru the radar. Expect to be seeing the Suburbans with the dark tinted windows outside your house any day now.

5. The VA has my address from a few years ago -
emergency stitches.

I thought I read that vets discharged after '75 only were affected.

6. My father-in-law and I both got ours today.
It did serve a useful purpose, though. It reminded me not to accept any calls from someone claiming to be from the VA.

8. My father got his today
He left the Army as a pilot in 1964. Then he did a couple years with the CT National Guard. That was a long, long time ago.

12. The letter, e-mail, and this little piece
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 09:46 PM by Squatch
As you are likely aware, the Department of Veterans Affairs recently lost a computer drive with the identifying information (names, SSNs and dates of birth) of as many as 20 million veterans. We now know that many active and reserve servicemembers may be affected. Although there is no evidence that the data has been used illegally, all Soldiers should be extra vigilant with regard to their financial well-being.

You should closely monitor your personal financial affairs while the DoD, VA and the Military Services work in earnest to determine the details and impacts of the compromise. We ask that you carefully monitor your bank accounts, credit card accounts and any other financial accounts for suspicious activity. For more information on how to protect yourself, contact ....

The Army will work to keep you informed and ensure that you are aware of the resources available to help deal with this issue.

16. I think the stolen data only affected those discharged after '75.
But I think someone upthread stated that they served before that point, and still got a letter. :hi:

I still don't get what this person was doing taking home that kind of information. Is this what * means by privacy being "fiercely protected?" :banghead:

21. My husband and I received our letter today.
Luckily, I was able to find mine. Thinking it was junk mail, he tore it up and threw it away. I had to explain the situation to him. Luckily, I saw the posts on DU informing me of this. I will definitely be on the lookout for any suspicious phone calls and e-mails.

...there's no indication that the VA is accepting any responsibility for any damage done.

24. Oh yeah, set off a stream of expletives in my house. Love the
non-responsibility that they put into the letter. "Hey, make sure you report anything suspicious, not to us, 'cause we don't really care" "Heh, sorry about that" "We'll tell our employees to try and be more careful when they take home the ENTIRE database of veteran's data." ARGGGGHHHH
