Who here writes music?
I don't necessarily mean notated music; I mean songs as well.

I've written three pieces for band, a couple of piano pieces, a couple of piano/vocal arrangements, and a bunch of songs.

1. I do !
Nothing snazzy just a bunch of love songs and sometimes I hate you songs - basically I am writing all the time . I keep notation paper with me at all times . I want to be a songwriter myself , I would be content with just produccing , composing , arranging and etc but everyone says I should sing as well . I am just " shy " .

Could you share your music with the rest of us DUers ?

4. And why not ?!
I understand ... actually whenever I play something for my mom or anyone else , I can't be in the same room with them . I run out of the house with my hand over my ears . I can't deal with sharing my music either .

6. Oh, I share it. I just share it selectively.
Besides, I have no clue as to how I would upload such material to the group.

3. I do
One choral piece, one impossible piano piece, a work in progress scored for drum and bugle corps, and several others on the burner. I simply don't have enough time to really work hard at completing them.... that needs to change.

Do you use software, or notate by hand, or compose by ear?

5. All three,
although I must admit that software helps tremendously when it comes to hearing complete arrangements.

I also do some multitrack home recordings where I play all of the instruments and sing all of the parts. It all depends on the style of the piece and what the piece calls for.

7. You're going to find a lot of talented people here on DU...

About a year ago, I started a thread for DU musicians and encouraged DU's to add links to their own music. Some of the music listed was fucking incredible! Wish I could access that thread - some great stuff! Anyhow, here's one of my songs:

9. I'm working on writing some stuff

After playing guitar behind other artists for 20 years,I have decided I want to put together an album of my own. I have the studio and all the musicians I'll ever need,I just have to come up with enough material for an album.

I don't want to put together a disc with one or two good songs,I am trying to put together something that flows like Kansas "Leftoverture"

I want to make it where the listener can actually listen to the thing start to finish without the urge to skip through selections of filler garbage. I think I will probably have it finished by 2025 at the rate I am going!

10. I write drum parts...i.e. music
Over the past decade, I have built my set up to the point where, with creative timing and general creativity, I feel I can write my own pieces.

Ahhh, percussion, the oldest of the arts.

11. I do...
I use software to do it. I wrote a piece for electric guitar, drums, violin and bells that was supposed to be going on a soundtrack album, but then the producer was killed in a car accident last summer, and the project was scuttled. Most of what I've written has been dance music, though, kind of like Chumbawamba. Then my hard drive died, and I lost most of those pieces, and it's been really hard to start again.

Right now I'm doing more arranging, though. I just finished a really cool arrangement of Harry Kandel's "A Nakht In Gan Eydn," which I hope to have used with my screenplay, if/when it ever goes into production. (My first real arrangement was a disco version of the Dead Kennedys' "Let's Lynch The Landlord," so I'm all over the map.)

12. Have done in the past, pretty rare now
Still do arrangements for people (e.g., for concerts and shows in a
nearby village) but don't get the time and interest coinciding these
days to write for myself.

Used to use pencil & paper mainly, some midi/notation s/w (originally
on Amiga 2000, later on PC). Keep telling myself that I'll get back
to it one day ...

13. I do a bit..
I started writing songs at a young age because I didnt have the ear to pick up other songs as well as my friends. I write all the music and lyrics for my band and had a few of my songs off our first CD played on some college radio stations here. We are just about done with the second CD. I do it more for my own creative outlet, but I will play out and do the other things bands have to do for the sake of the other members of the band.

14. Yes. Many, Many
I struggle with lyrics though. I've got lots of good music committed to tape, but often hated the lyrics a week later.

I've got about 20 completed songs i'm happy with to this day. The rest are either disappointing, after the fact, or just bad.

I've committed about 30 experimental pieces to tape and have notated about 6 of them. Now, however, with sequencing software, everything i write gets notated automatically.

16. I've written exactly two songs
They aren't half bad, but I rarely get inspired. Also, I can't sing worth a damn, so I just write the lyrics and chords and let the singer figure out the melody.

18. I write "serious" music
Sorry for the brackets "serious", but that's the best way to put it - I don't write songs, but compose in the classical tradition (though I compose in a very Rennaissance/20th Century kind of way). Pieces for choirs and bell choirs and etc. No symphonies. Yet!
