Ever gotten a cold on top of a cold?
Edited on Mon Jun-12-06 11:33 PM by Beausoir
I did. This week.

I never thought it possible.

Catch a cold. Fight it off for a week until it's almost gone. Then, catch another cold with a different set of symptoms. Sick as a dog.

I thought that the body would be so geared up from fighting the first cold that a second infection would be impossible.

Maybe I'm just getting old?

3. Wow! I can't believe someone answered this!
I don't know why I am so suprised about this double cold thing...but it really does wear a person down.

14. I have immunity issues
so it's not uncommon for that to happen to me. Or that I'll be sick for 2-3x as long as most people. Colds will wipe me out like nobody's business.

Flus...:scared:

4. I am sorry about that. Can I ask a personal question?
Do you, by any chance, have spleen issues? Enlargement or pain?

I'm just curious because I contracted Cytomegalovirus as an adult, 5 years ago and it invaded my spleen. Now, whenever I am about to get sick, my spleen enlarges and gets very painful. I've had it checked out at Mayo and been through the whole rigamarole.

Just wondering if you had any issues with that, since you have immune issues.

Here's hoping for a healthy summer to you!

6. No spleen issues
because my spleen was removed during my cancer. The lack of spleen is part of my immunity issues.

8. Good lord. I am sorry about that. Wow.
At one point, they were talking about removing my spleen because of the splenomegaly. Yikes.

Best to you. Stay healthy.

10. I find ways to stay as healthy as I can
I have two children, so they bring all sorts of virii and bacteria home, but I wash my hands like I have OCD.

12. Do you use that Purell stuff? Does that work for you?
We really cracked down on hand washing this winter. Minnesota winters are long and dark, I have 5 very young children and my husband works in a hospital. We get germs constantly.

I used Purell faithfully, several times a day and I THINK I was healthier...but I can't guarantee it.

13. I use it when it is inconvenient to actually use soap and water
I am in Minnesota as well.

I am not sure if Purell is more or less effective than soap and water. I just know that either way, my hands are disinfected for awhile.

5. Happens often
Each cold brings a different set of stuff that causes you to get sick--your body has already been compromised once and amkes for easy invasion. However, it is almost impossible to catch the same kind of cold strand ever again, and if you do it only lasts one to three days. Professions that have a high rate of exposure like teaching (my job) sees a lot of first and second year teachers get very very sick as the run through all the alpha virii--veteran teachers very rarely catch them. I now average a bout 2 colds a year though one of those two is almost always in late spring or summer for some reason.

The things I absolutely hate is when you get a cold sore directly on top of another one--I always get them in groups of two, and those times where they form on the exact same part of the gum are unbelievably painful.

7. Ok. I thought cold sores were outside the mouth? I am lucky in that I
don't get them outside.

But just this week, my little girl got a canker sore on the inside of her mouth. She was really miserable.

Had her do the salt-water gargle thing for two days and it cleared right up.

Now? I've got one. On the inside.

Viruses are so weird.

9. Now I'm confused...
I always always get canker sores and cold sores mixed up. There's different names for those that appear outside the mouth, on the inside of the mouth on the lips, and the inside of the mouth on the gums. I tend to get the last two and always in groups of two (the second usually forms 3 or so days after the first one). Both types that I get are painful, but there is a special hell that can only be described as getting two on the same section of gum.

20. There's this stuff called "Wellness" that works great for the immune
system. They taste like ass and you're supposed to take three every three hours at the first sign of feeling "off." I've been taking it for a few years now and it really does work. I haven't developed a real cold since. Any time someone got sick at the health food store I worked at, the owner would give us all a bottle. It never seemed to spread through the store.
