1. My acoustic rattles
Especially the lower E string, any suggestion? It is really noticable when playing the E string on its own (not in chord).

3. Find a local guitarsmith.
Every town has at least one guy who is a wizard at setting up guitars (setting the intonation, leveling frets and such). Ask the locals at any music store. However, they will keep your guitar for a few days. This is why I have more than one.

It would have been better if they came with an proxy string changer.

6. Years ago
back in the days when I was always broke. I use to boil the strings and re-use them.

11. COOL!
a weirder answer than the question was!

What does boiling do for guitar strings? I guess I assume they eventually get stretched out, but does boling "shrink" them? And would it work with steel strings, or just gut? Are there steel strings, I thought there were?

13. I did a lot silly stuff when I was younger.
Someone told me that it worked and it never hurt no one. Yes, they were steel.

18. wow
between you and Todd (sorry, Todd, his/her thread, I think it's only polite to reply mostly to her/him) I'm learning all sorts of interesting guitar things.

Can y'all teach me to tune and play a guitar via thread-postings? ha ha ha

:bounce:

ok, I think I'm done with questions here.

14. boiling is a cheap-ass way to revive them
it gets all the grease and grime out from inbetween the windings. personally i just leave em on until they break or they get too dead sounding. i don't know about gut strings, but it "works" on steel strings. strings can be nickel, bronze, phosphor, steel, nylon, gut, some are covered in a wierd silk winding (elixir brand).

19. It was either food or new strings.
In the seventies when I was in college I guess I opted for the cheap-ass method a few times.

8. i rarely change my strings anymore..
i like the dirty sound. i HATE the bright, fresh string sound. i rarely break them anymore now that i switched to .011's. what really annoys me is helping out at the guitar shop's "jam night" and all the damn students change their strings that morning, so i'm tuning all night because they don't know to play for a few hours to get the strings settled in.

16. hehe
i spent like 2 months teaching a student to sight read jingle bells. she wouldn't practice sight reading at home, and i only had one book that was simple enough to work on her reading skills with. god i got sick of that damn song!! it was in the summertime too, which made it even stranger.

10. that's a loaded question..
I taught for a few years, the main place that i taught at was in a wealthy financial/business district and i've seen so many people with 15-20 guitars that can't play a goddamn thing. i guess it's like anything else, you get hung up in the material aspect of it, i know i did for a while. i'm not saying if you have many instruments you suck, i'm just saying it's not a requirement for being a musician.

I always tell everybody I am a better collector than musician. However, I have been playing the guitar for 35 years and I don't suck.

Frank Capra's "You Can't Take It with You" is over and it's time for me to go to bed.

I really enjoyed our little chat.
