POLL:Do any of us lounge lizards care if they take our threads off latest?
Periodically, some overly-serious person goes down to comments/suggestions and pitches a fit because the lounge threads about masturbation or whatever are pushing the "serious" flame wars in GD off the "latest" page. First of all, couldn't they just use "lobby" as their default? But that's not the point.

Personally, I couldn't give a shit if the lounge threads are displayed anywhere else on the website. I don't think most of us lounge people care either. Do you actually use the "latest" page as a reference for lounge threads? I never have. But I think Skinner thinks we actually care if they appear or not and we'll be hurt if they're removed.

So what I propose is this: We all let him know that we don't give a shit if they take the lounge threads off of "latest" and then Skinner can remove them and the overly-serious GD denizens can enlarge the stick up their...I mean, they'll be happy too. :)

Check in on this thread if you don't care if the lounge threads are removed from the "latest" page.

Cat :)

4. Don't care
Kinda go back and forth on it. Really, it's that kind of issue. Yes, perhaps it's not the greatest thing (particularly for new visitors) to have on a portal to these fora. On the other hand, the GD topics (including subject lines) get way out of hand and are often far more offensive than even the most yak-laden of Lounge posts.

So I guess the upshot is that I'm ambivalent, because one point of view cancels the other. Take it or just leave it and let people figure things out for themselves.....

Besides, I'm another that doesn't come in through the 'Latest' page.

I am surprised, though, at the level of vitriole that this question inspired. Seems reasonable enough a question to me. :-)

8. You sick bastards are bringing this whole site down!!
You're far too childish for my superior serious ways and I dont want to be associated with any people that have a sense of humor.HUMOR IS NOT FUNNY...so cut it out or I'll tell mom!

Masturbation-NOT FUNNY
Thongs-NOT FUNNY
Yaks-NOT FU--well ok,yaks ARE funny.

Can't you all just grow up and start taking things seriously? Why aren't you out in the streets like me,a REAL activist? I dont have time for yaks and masturbation (and it's pissing me off let me tell ya).I'm far too busy being serious for this child-like simplicity.HOW DARE YOU ALL UNWIND AND RELAX!!!!!

BAH!

9. Well, sweetie, I already said my piece & I haven't changed my mind
I think some folks (I'm drawing a pointed reference here to the fact that I have not named any specific folks, just 'folks' in general) really need to get over feeling offended by the topics in the Lounge.

The topics in GD are not pure and holy. The topics in the Lounge are not all drivel and balderdash. Some good stuff gets mooted about in here.

People easily offended have no business on the internet.

I think it's possible that some folks might be MORE likely to sign on with DU if they saw some of the topics in the Lounge. I'm reminded of a quote from Hamlet, "Dost thou think because thou are virtuous, the shall be no more cakes and ale?"

16. BTW, folks, I didn't repost this thread, this was the original...
before SoCalDem posted it in poll form. So I didn't bring this up again, it was resurrected on its own!! :)

Anyway, SOTeric, I agree with you to a certain extent, especially about growing a thicker skin on the internet. I've had to learn that lesson myself--and it was a hard lesson, but it really served me in my real life as well as this website.

I know when I first came here, the lounge was the first place I came and it was definitely where I felt most comfortable. I agree, people sometimes need to ease into things like this.

12. Yes I care
Why don't we rework the whole site everytime there is a gripe.

I say, make ignore work to put individual forums on ignore. That way those of us who wish to see the new threads in the lounge can and those of us who don't wish to see them won't.

14. I want to be able to delete threads
from a forum.
Just for me, so I don't have to wade through all the crap I don't care about or have clever replies in.

15. A modest compromise proposal, inspired by something from the locked thread
Yes, keep the Lounge threads off the Latest page, but there should be some kind of formal process for submitting announcements such as rbnyc's situation so that these can be placed on the Latest page, at the top of the Lobby page, or both. After all, if you look at the threads about rbnyc's accident and wedding, you'll notice many people who were hearing about it for the first time, even on the latest updates. Thus I think that this is a pretty good idea regardless of what is done with the Lounge/Latest issue.

Criteria for selecting announcements? I'd say suddenness and criticalness (if that's a word). However, maybe criteria could be pretty loose. DUers are a good bunch and are happy to offer sympathy; would probably like to see a central place for announcements (sort of a Church Bulletin). Anyway, just a thought.
